But Penn State dominated the Wildcats (3-5, 0-2) defensively, allowing only three shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Heidi Leuchte, the Big Ten's top goalkeeper, made two saves to extend her streak to 169 minutes without allowing a goal.

"They (Northwestern) did not have many chances," Morett said.

The Lions then came into Iowa yesterday, looking to extend their winning streak to three. Also, the team hoped to win its first game at Grant Field since 1994.

Hawkeyes goalkeeper Kelly Druley would help prevent that.

Druley stopped nine shots to turn away the Lions, frustrating them the same way Connecticut goalkeeper Danielle Vile did a week earlier in a 1-0 victory against the Lions. The shutout was Druley's fourth of the season.

Leuchte's scoreless streak would end at 175 minutes and 46 seconds, when Iowa midfielder Anita Miller pushed a shot into the net with 23:05 remaining in the first half. Senior Quan Nim assisted on the goal.

The rest of the first half was a stalemate, with neither team making any significant attacks to the other team's goal.

Iowa (8-0, 2-0) would add an insurance goal when freshman Tiffany Leister scored on a penalty corner with 27:29 remaining in the game. British import Lesley Irvine and senior Alycyn Freet assisted on the goal.

Penn State would make one final push at the end, desperate to get on the scoreboard. But on this day, the Hawkeyes defense denied the Lions. Freet and senior Sarah Thorn helped Druley by making key defensive saves.

Conference foes Michigan State and Michigan come to town next weekend. But first, the Lions will take a breather from the Big Ten, hosting non-conference foe Syracuse (6-3, 1-0 Big East), 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bigler Athletic Complex.
