Highlights of the chase
A chronology of the Ira Einhorn murder case:
Sept. 11, 1977 -- Einhorn girlfriend Helen "Holly" Maddux is last seen alive on a double-date with Einhorn and another couple to a movie in New Jersey.
Late 1977 -- Students living in the Powelton Village apartment house where Einhorn and Maddux resided complain of a foul odor.
March 28, 1979 -- Police investigating tip from private detectives hired by Maddux family arrest Einhorn after finding Maddux's mummified remains in a padlocked steamer trunk at the apartment.
Jan. 21, 1981 -- Einhorn disappears on eve of pre-trial hearing in Maddux death, jumping $40,000 bail secured by his mother's house. Authorities believe he fled to Ireland, where U.S. at time has no extradition treaty.
1986 -- Einhorn sighted regularly on campus of Trinity College, Dublin, but U.S. and Ireland now have extradition. Spooked, he disappears again.
1989 -- Einhorn turns up in Stockholm living with a Swedish woman, Annika Flodin, but eludes capture.
1991 -- Flodin leaves Sweden, travels to several countries.
September 1993 -- Philadelphia district attorney's office tries Einhorn in absentia. He is found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for Maddux's murder.
1994 -- Flodin applies for a French driver's license that later provides the formal link to Einhorn's whereabouts.
June 12, 1997 -- Einhorn arrested at rural home in small French town where he and Flodin had been living.
September 1997 -- French judges delay extradition demanding Einhorn be given a new trial.
Dec. 4, 1997 -- Einhorn is released.
