Share files offshore with Swaptor
Some file-sharing applications use a decentralized network to avoid the legal troubles that plague Napster. The idea is that with no central server controlling the network, there's nothing to shut down and no one to sue, except for the millions of users. But these programs have had problems with scalability and ease of use, making them unappealing to the masses. Swaptor uses a more brute-force legal approach by locating its servers offshore, where it hopes that the long arm of the RIAA and the U.S. judicial system can't reach. Swaptor uses the Napster protocol, but it lets you search for all file types--not just MP3s and WMAs.

Required attention span: 5 minutes

Before you start, you'll need to gather this element:

Follow these simple steps

Step one
Install and run Swaptor. Go to File • Settings • Directory and look at the path listed under "Download files to this directory." The default location is the Download folder in the Swaptor folder. If that's where you want to save files, click OK. Otherwise click the ellipsis (...) button and choose a different folder. Then click OK.

Step two
Click the Search button on Swaptor's toolbar. Pick whether you want to search for MP3 files or all file types and enter a filename (or artist and song name). Under Location, choose All Servers for the widest search. Then click Begin Search.

Step three
Swaptor will automatically send you to the Search Results window. Look through the results for a file that you want and double-click it. Swaptor will then send you to the Downloads window, where you can check the status of the file that you're saving. When the download is complete, go to the folder that you specified in Step One to retrieve the file.

Tips

  • Be careful what you download. Make sure you look at the extension on every file. If it ends in .vbs, it's likely a virus and should be avoided.
  • Go to File • Settings • Bandwidth to change the maximum number of files that you can download or upload at any one time.
  • If you're on a sluggish connection and uploads are slowing your downloads, go to File • Settings • Bandwidth and check the "Limit the bandwidth of files you are sending" box.
