Dog and Pony, Rev. 1.1
Postado por caio em Thursday August 02 2001 @ 01:22PM CDT |
Deep in engineering, where mortals seldom go
A manager and customer come looking for a show;
They pass, amused, among us and they sign in on the log
They've come to see our pony and they've come to see our dog.
Three things to be wary of: A new kid in his prime,
A man that knows the answers, and code that runs first time.
Summoned from our cubicles, to conference room we go
We bring our dog and pony, 'cause we know they'll want a show,
Watching while we enter, with a shifty, restless eye
The customer sits waiting in his pin-striped suit and tie.
Three things never trust in: That's the vendor's final bill,
The promises your boss makes and the customer's good will.

Eudora Welty Dead at 92
Postado por caio em Wednesday August 01 2001 @ 01:52AM CDT |
Deu no TidBITS:
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty died last Monday at age 92. Welty was a lifelong resident of Jackson, Mississippi, and an icon of American literature. Among her best known works are the short story collection The Golden Apples and the novels Losing Battles and The Optimist's Daughter; two of her works (The Ponder Heart and The Robber Bridegroom) also became Broadway plays. Her stories tended to focus on the lives of sheltered characters in southern America, but also quietly contradict easy categorization into any particular genre. Welty is also noted for her photographs, particularly images of the South during the Great Depression taken when she was working as a "junior publicity agent" for the Works Progress Administration.

In relation to the Macintosh world, the popular email program Eudora is named for Eudora Welty, specifically because of her famous short story "Why I Live At The P.O.," published in her first collection in 1941. Programmer Steve Dorner read the story in college, and it was still with him years later when it came time to name the first version of his new email program.

Duas recomendações: leia o conto e use o programa.

Foundation Denies 'Bot Conspiracy'
Postado por caio em Monday July 30 2001 @ 01:07PM CDT |
A.L.I.C.E. Organization Refutes Claims of an AI Human Impersonation Phenomenon
30 July 2001-San Francisco CA: Scattered reports have reached the ALICE A.I. Foundation (http://alicebot.org) about a growing rumor that "thousands of men and women online are actually robots." People have reportedly been deceived by robots in chat rooms, instant messaging conversation and even via email exchanges. Some have allegedly formed deep, emotional relationships with these robots and often feel betrayed when their partner's robot identity is finally revealed.
"One woman who fell in love with an online chat robot, and was then heartbroken by the discovery of its true identity, has threatened to take us to court," said Foundation Chair and co-founder Richard Wallace.
To set the record straight, the A.L.I.C.E. AI Foundation (http://alicebot.org) feels compelled to release an unambiguous statement that they are unaware of, and certainly not involved in, any "conspiracy to toy with human emotions" on the part of a supposedly "exponentially growing number of bots that impersonate humans", as one rumor-monger has put it.

Boycott Adobe
Postado por caio em Thursday July 19 2001 @ 02:43PM CDT |
Adobe helps graphic designers turn ideas into art.
Adobe also helps turn security experts into felons.
On 16 July 2001, Russian programmer Dmitry Sklyarov was arrested by federal agents in Las Vegas, Nevada. His crime: pointing out major security flaws in Adobe PDF and eBook software.
The only thing that companies like Adobe understand is money.
Their money...and how to get more money out of your pocket and into theirs.
The time has come for Adobe to share the pain.

Puppetry Of The Penis
Postado por caio em Wednesday July 18 2001 @ 09:28PM CDT |
The ancient Australian art of genital origami. Direct from London’s West End, Simon Morley and David Friend perform hilariously ridiculous bits and pieces, manipulating their members into various shapes, objects and landmarks. Working together as a unit, they bring tricks including the Didgeridoo, Mollusc and Hamburger to life, while demonstrating ample charm and wit, in a tasteful presentation all wrapped up in an incredible package.

- russo escreve programa que converte eBooks em PDFs
- russo dá palestra na DEFCON
- FBI some com o russo

I just now got an urgent email from Vladmimir Katalov, Elcom's Managing director. Here's the most important chunk:
As you probably know, yesterday (July 15th) we had "eBook Security: Theory and Practice" speech on DefCon 9 conference in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA). The main speaker was Mr. Dmitry Sklyarov, the author of "Advanced eBook Processor", an employee of our company (ElcomSoft).
Today, Dmitry had to return from Las Vegas to Moscow (through Los Angeles). However, he has been hold by FBI in the airport! Since then, we were not able to get any additional information (even through Russian consulate), except the fact that he was not boarded on the flight to Moscow (which was about 3 pm local time).
Now it is 6:30, but we still don't know anything -- where he is now, and what the actual problem is.
We will keep you informed!

(17 July 2001 0100 PDST) Vladimir Katalov has informed Planet eBook that Dmitry Sklyarov, author of the “Advanced eBook Processor”, was in fact arrested, and that he is being held in a Las Vegas prison waiting for subsequent judgement in California. The reason for the arrest has been cited as being the Advanced eBook Processor and his speech at DefCon 9. According to Vladimir, Dmitry's wife in Moscow received this information via an interpreter and has not yet been able to talk to her husband.
