#42 JAWN'S JUICE / JANUARY 21, 2003

All News Issue: Henry Simmons, Dottie Peoples, Tank, Lil’ Mo, Dennis Rodman, David
by Jawn Murray (Washington, DC)
Henry Simmons and Lauren Sanchez
(Jan. 21, 2003) Guess Who’s Getting Married!: “NYPD Blue” star Henry Simmons announced his engagement to Lauren Sanchez on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Lauren is a news anchor on KCOP in Los Angeles. The announcement came yesterday during Henry’s appearance on “The View.” “I haven’t even told some of my closest friends yet,” said Simmons. Ironically, Lauren was one of the original candidates up for Debbie Matenopoulos’ spot on “The View” after she was let go. That slot ended up going to Lisa Ling, who has since left the show for a gig at National Geographic. Lauren and Henry met at a charity event nearly a year ago when she approached him. "I knew he was someone on TV. I walked right up to him," said Sanchez in a previous interview. The couple have not set a date yet.

In other engagement news: “West Wing” star Duel Hill is engaged to his girlfriend of two years, Nicole Lynn. * R&B; star Heather Headley – whose current single “I Wish I Wasn’t” is making major impact at urban radio – recently got engaged to former New York Jet Brian Musso.

A Learning Experience: Comedian and actor David Alan Grier learned a valuable lesson recently; if you are going to sneak your own liquor into a nightclub, at least make sure the venue stocks what you are concealing. According to New York Magazine, Grier was partying at Centro-Fly in New York City when he opened the bottle of Ketel One vodka he smuggled in. When security saw the bottle, they told Grier he had to leave. Onlookers attempted to tell security who Grier was, but the bouncers apparently didn't recognize him—or care about his celebrity status. Finally, the club's promoter, Noel Ashman, caught wind of the situation and was able to fend them off. Despite Grier's faux pas, Ashman gave him a complimentary bottle of Skyy, one of the select few top-shelf vodkas that Centro-Fly offers.

Who Knew?: R&B; singer Tank was surprised by his experience collaborating with the Cash Money Millionaires on his current album. "Looking at them, you would just think, they’re just about money. But them cats work so hard, and as soon as the beat comes on, they got their hands moving and they’re writing words down. One of the beats Mannie Fresh did for me he did in, like, five minutes, tops. We were writing in five minutes. In spite of all of the money, all of the notoriety, they still got that hunger, they still work like I work," said Tank. The self-contained talent’s – he’s a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer - sophomore set on Blackground Records, “One Man,” is in stores now.

On His Own: IMX frontman Batman, who now goes by his birth name Marques Houston, is readying the release of his solo debut for Interscope Records. Marques performed his debut single, “That Girl,” on Dick Clark's annual New Year's Eve special. The 21-year-old singer’s album "MH," is due out in March. The other IMX members Romeo and LDB are also working on solo efforts, but there is no word on whether they have secured record deals. The group said in an interview, "IMX will always be together. We feel like it's time to venture off and do new things." They are also producing two new acts, TG4 and Jhane.

Gospel Gumbo: She’s called the Songbird of the South and she’s definitely one of gospel superstars. I’m talking about Dottie Peoples, who despite being a traditional gospel artist, sells the amount of CDs that contemporary artists like Hezekiah Walker and Karen Clark-Sheard do. The Atlanta native is also receiving attention from the mainstream community now, after her appearance at the 2002 Grammy Awards in the sequined American flag gown. This past weekend, Ms. Dottie “showed up, and showed out,” at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC for the annual WPAS Men, Women, & Children of the Gospel Mass Choir’s Martin Luther King, Jr. concert. The Mass Choir also featured The Duke Ellington School of the Arts Concert Choir. Dottie -- donned in a purple tuxedo-like gown finished in rhinestones -- performed three songs, including her smash “On Time God,” as the special guest for the event. “I don’t know how to act at a place like this,” laughed Peoples. “I just came to give God some praise.”

Gospel duo Dawkins & Dawkins just inked a deal with Matthew Knowles’ Music World Gospel label. The Dawkins brothers were formerly signed to Harmony Records and had a highly successful release called, “Focus,” in 1998. The pair has also produced music for mainstream recording artists like Christina Aguilera and Dave Hollister. Music World Gospel is already home to Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams and newcomers Ramiyah. Don’t be surprised if former first lady Monique Walker and Mariah Carey background diva Melonie Daniels end up on Music World Gospel’s roster as well.

Neo-soul gospel star Lisa McClendon has signed a deal with Integrity Gospel. McClendon’s debut release, “My Diary Your Life,” was released independently in May of 2002. The Florida-based singer is already working on her debut for Integrity, which is a division of Sony Music.

Last week’s Stellar Awards recap had several blunders that I need to fix. First up, the group that sang “Praise Is What I Do” is named Shekinah Glory Ministry, not Chicago Glory Ministry. The woman who sang the duet with Donnie McClurkin was named Lynette Hawkins-Stephens, not Stephens-Hawkins. Lastly, I failed to mention that my buddy Tracy Morgan of Heaven 1850 in Washington, DC received the Stellar Award for Announcer of the Year. (Special shout out to Cheryl Jackson of Heaven 1580!)

* Look for my new column Out Tha Box to debut at www.TheGospelZone.com on February 1, 2003.

Stuff You’ve Probably Heard By Now: Will Smith has been dropped by Columbia Records. * Soul veteran Lou Rawls was arrested and booked in Albuquerque on one count of battery on his companion, Nina Inman. * Ja Rule and Eve are headed out on a U.S. tour starting January 29. * D'Angelo was granted a continuance last week for resisting-arrest and assault charges stemming from a November road rage incident. A Chesterfield, VA, district court judge gave the singer a new court date on March 12th. * Craig David is apparently furious at his U.S. label Atlantic Records for telling him his fitted jeans were not considered cool in America. Craig was told to wear baggy pants if he was going to make it big in the US. He wouldn’t oblige.

Things That Make You Say Hmmm!?!: "I like my music loud, I like my alcohol hard, I like my women hot, I like my food spicy and I like my sex nasty. Does that make me a bad guy?" said Dennis Rodman in his 1997 book “Walk on the Wild Side.” Dennis Rodman is truly one of a kind. I want to interview him so if anyone can make that happen, e-mail me at GarekNews@hotmail.com.

Can’t Say Names: What R&B; soul singer is rumored to be dating a young newscaster? Sources say that this singer, who is known for her public relationships, yet again has found love in a younger man. No one knows how said singer nabs so many mates, but you can’t hate on her for maintaining. * A young R&B; singer and a certain BET talent that I previously couldn’t mention were dating, have split. The couple dated for several weeks, and the on-air personality even appeared in the singer’s recent music video, but have now gone their separate ways.

Quickies:

~ Lil’ Mo is readying her comeback. The pint-sized singer, who first made a name for herself as the voice behind the hip-hop hits like Missy Elliott’s “Hot Boyz,” Ja-Rule’s “Put It On Me” and “I Cry,” and Jay-Z’s “Parkin’ Lot Pimpin’,” is about to drop her sophomore joint “Girl Next Door” in April. The first single from the set is “4Ever,” which features labelmate Fabulous. The album also includes production by Warryn Campbell, Missy Elliott, Brian Cox, Walter Milsap and others.

~ “Real World Las Vegas” castmates Alton, Irulan, Brynn, Steven, and Trichelle were spotted at Washington, DC’s hot new Rouge Hotel this past weekend. The five reality show participants apparently stayed at the modern boutique hotel while they were in the Nation’s Capitol for a Mardi Gras party at a club called Lulu’s.

~ Neo-soul singer Na2 rocked the Cada Vez restaurant in Washington, DC during the launch party for The Ear Magazine. Na2 performed two songs during the party and had the standing-room only crowd screaming for more. Among those in attendance were Miesha Rice of Universal Music and Distribution, Carl Overby of Sister 2 Sister, LaTanya St. Clair of LaStreet Promotions, and Tymex of V2 Records.

~ Eden Magazine’s publisher and editor-in-chief Bailey Enos Orenia has a new show "The PLayHouse" on XM’s Channel 67 "The City." The show airs on Saturday and Sundays from from 7:00 a.m. to 12 noon EST. You can also check Bailey out at www.EdenMag.com.

~ Wasn’t ABC’s “Disco Ball” special off the hook last week? Where did they find Irene Cara? (You couldn’t have told me I wasn’t going to marry her growing up!) Who has been giving Mya voice lessons? I have never heard her sound better. She really turned the special out. Weren’t Whoopi Goldberg’s big white shoes hilarious during her performance with Martha Wash? I want to see Taylor Dayne come back in a major way. The Pointer Sisters, Usher, and Gloria Gaynor all did their thing as well. Who told Thelma Houston to wear that see-through skirt? Someone tell her to stop watching those Christina Aguilera music videos. If you didn’t catch it – you missed out. Maybe ABC will air it again.
