Gnosis Magazine Ceases Publication

List Back Issues

San Francisco -- Jay Kinney, publisher of GNOSIS Magazine, has announced that "the Journal of the Western Inner Traditions" has ceased publication. In a letter to Gnosis subscribers, sent out at the beginning of May 1999, Kinney cited staff burnout in the wake of recent financial crises as the primary cause behind the magazine's shutdown.

GNOSIS has been the only newsstand publication devoted to the esoteric and mystical traditions of the West to achieve international circulation in recent decades. Its publisher, the Lumen Foundation, plans to keep the GNOSIS website online and will announce any future projects here (http://www.lumen.org).

GNOSIS published its first issue in the Fall of 1985, on "Gnosticism: Ancient & Modern." It initially followed a twice-yearly schedule, expanding to quarterly with issue #5. Its final issue was #51 (Spring 1999) on "The Grail."

GNOSIS subscribers will receive LAPIS Magazine (published by the N.Y. Open Center) for the remainder of their subscriptions. LAPIS has published material by a number of the same writers as have written for GNOSIS.

Back issues of GNOSIS are still available at special sale prices. Complete sets (issues #1-51) are $245 (U.S.) plus shipping. For descriptions of back issues, see the list of back issues, which includes links to the tables of contents for each issue, and our searchable online index. --Jay Kinney

P.S.: An interview with former GNOSIS editor Richard Smoley is now available online.
