a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization

Dr. Malidoma Some Malidoma Somé is a fully initiated Shaman of the Dagara Tribe of West Central Africa, and the holder of two PhD's from the Sorbonne in Paris and Brandies University in Boston. Malidoma teaches the medicine of Mother Nature, how to recreate the natural, old instinct in the souls of people, to reopen the eyes to see the sacred again, unhampered by modernism.  It is a context in which medicine, healing, and a re-acquaintance with the old can take place.  Malidoma tries to accomplish this by working with people to help them implement new ideas to form communities founded in spirit; communities where the flavor of indigenous wisdom prevails through a rediscovery of the magic of nature.

Echoes of the Ancestors, Inc. is a non-profit charitable corporation created by Malidoma. It is dedicated to the preservation of the Wisdom of the Dagara and other indigenous tribes of West Central Africa. Its activities include the dissemination of information about these cultures, donations of clothing to Dagara children, and the construction of water wells, and water reservoirs to help fight the drought, sickness and extreme poverty in Africa. This web site explains the purposes of the foundation, its charitable activities, and provides some information about the wisdom of the Dagara, and their chief spokes-person for the West, Malidoma Somé.

Echoes of the Ancestors was born in response to the strong need to give a context in which Dagara ancestral beliefs and tradition, wisdom, and culture can be brought to the West and shared with people in modern culture who are seeking an indigenous model of spiritual and holistic development. It's purpose is not to transplant indigenous African spirituality and to create African culture in the West, but to provide a model for seekers of ways of creating and working with new concepts of socio-spiritual communities in this country. It also provides a vehicle for seekers to give back to the Dagara, and other indigenous people of Africa, to help them in their material needs, and to cope with modernity.

PRESERVING DAGARA WISDOM

Echoes of the Ancestors, among other things, helps to preserve Ancient Dagara Wisdom through a training program:   Into the Heart of African Shamanism

Into the Heart of African Shamanism is a three year intensive program which transmits Shamanic practices drawn from the Elders and Wisdom Keepers of the Dagara tribe.  This program culminates with a trip to Africa where participants will work with the Elders, Magicians and Wisdom Keepers.  If you would like to participate in this intensive shamanic teaching, click on the following link to obtain detailed information:  Into the Heart of African Shamanism.

Proceeds from this program are used to benefit the Dagara people.

HELPING THE DAGARA

In addition to bringing this cultural wisdom to the West, Echoes of the Ancestors. is also responding to the urgent need and crisis situation in West Central Africa.  The agriculture imposed on the Dagara tribes during colonial rule has damaged their land and recently triggered wide spread draught among tens of thousands of Dagara people alone.  During the dry season (half the year) thousands of Dagara women must walk for miles each day to the nearest water hole.  They carry the water back on their heads in buckets.  The water they get is frequently unfit for consumption - but that is all they have.  The draught, caused by changed soil conditions and weather patterns, in turn causes serious problems of disease and starvation, triggering in turn a migration to the cities.  Simply put - due to the collision of the Dagara culture with Colonialism and the modern world - this important wisdom tradition and high spiritual culture is in danger of extinction.  The world has already lost so many indigenous cultures, let's help this great culture help themselves, and survive with us into the Twenty First Century.  If they do not survive, it will be a irreparable loss for us all.   Echoes of the Ancestors is the central organization helping to alleviate the water problems in Dagara villages, thus keeping the village able to remain within its ancestral boundaries.  Click here to learn more about the Echoes of the Ancestors' Water Project.

You can help the Dagara people in three ways:  The first is by attending a program presented by Echoes of the Ancestors.  All proceeds of events presented by Echoes of the Ancestors go directly to help the Dagara people.  The second is by becoming a member of Echoes of the Ancestors and the third, by a contribution.
