Here at the Ethereal Convent
we take privacy seriously, both yours and ours.
Privacy is a basic human
right, to be cherished and exercised at all times, even when it isn't
needed. Email or other correspondence about your shopping list might not be very
embarrassing, but your personal, health, financial affairs, political views,
relationships, gossip and numerous other things could very well be a cause of
unwelcome embarrassment if read by snoops, hackers, casual ISP employees, or
others.
Sending personal information in plain text emails invites hackers, snoops
and other nasty people to commit identity theft, fraud, and other crimes,
against you. Don't encourage criminals!
Personal identity details that fall into the hands of strangers
can lead to all sorts of unhappy impersonations, which is why we consistently preach a
message of strong security as a matter of course. You might not need it for your
lunch booking today, but you might want it tomorrow to send your monthly
shopping list to your leather goods supplier.
Encryption protects your privacy, and
ensures that your Email can only read by your intended recipients.
Signing verifies that your Email or file really is from you, and that it
has not been tampered with.
Email sent from any nun.org address or
other sub-sect of the Ethereal Convent is
signed by the sender.
If it isn't signed, it's a fake. Attachments are also signed.
Whenever possible (that is, if we have your Public Key), we also encrypt Email we send.
Emails
are always sent as plain text. Please reciprocate when you Email us.
We do not like gaudy and risk rich HTML formatted Emails.
Our
Privacy Policy
All information sent by a form from our
website is strongly encrypted at all times.
We never give any personal information to any other organization.
Spam - we never spam.
Our PGP
Keys
All the PGP Public Keys we use are listed on the main PGP
Keyservers, at
ldap://keyserver.pgp.com and ldap://europe.keys.pgp.com:11370
Specific PGP

At the Ethereal Convent, we use two excellent
privacy tools: PGP and Hushmail.
See below for notes about these wonderful, user friendly privacy enhancement products.
1. |
PGP http://pgp.com |
PGP is Pretty
Good Privacy. PGP sets the standard in secure and private personal and business communications, and has been the leader for many years. The latest version makes highly secure Public Key Encryption available for easy use with most popular Email clients. In this context, "highly secure" means that without both the private key and pass phrase, an intercepted message can not be decrypted by even the most powerful state within the lifetime of our universe. That's Pretty Good Privacy. PGP code and algorithms are available for public examination, and have not been found flawed after years of scrutiny. Do not trust anything that is not open to this sort of critical peer examination. The personal use version of PGP is
available as a free download. Details at: http://pgp.com |
2. |
Hushmail http://hushmail.com |
Hushmail is a web mail
system, that employs PGP standard encryption in a seamless, easy to use
service. It is a bit like Hotmail, except unlike Hotmail, Hushmail is secure
and private. Our regular Hushmail Email address is sodem@hushmail.com Another neat feature of Hushmail are its AntiSpam options - email sent to sodem@hushmail.com must be encrypted, or it will be rejected as spam. If you Email us from your own Hushmail account, then it will be encrypted by default, otherwise, you can use PGP to encrypt to our public key for sodem@hushmail.com Spammers can not feasibly encrypt their rants to all the recipients unique public keys, so a policy of only accepting encrypted Email effectively cuts out all spam. The basic Hushmail service is free (2MB storage) and an upgrade to 32MB is very little. Details - Sign up at: https://www.hushmail.com |
