ABOARD USS CARL VINSON AT SEA (Feb. 20, 2003) -- A landing signal enlisted (LSE) salutes an SH-60F Seahawk pilot from the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 8 "Eight Ballers." The salute signifies that control of the aircraft is relinquished to the pilot. Carl Vinson is currently conducting operations in the Pacific Ocean.

ABOARD USS KITTY HAWK AT SEA -- An F/A-18C Hornet of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 27 “Royal Maces” lands on USS Kitty Hawk's (CV 63) flight deck Feb. 14.  Kitty Hawk and embarked Carrier Air Wing 5 remain mission-ready to respond to emergent national tasking where needed, and were recently ordered to the Central Command area of responsibility to join coalition forces preparing for possible operations in that area.

ABOARD USS KITTY HAWK AT SEA -- The Navy’s largest First Navy Jack, or “Don’t Tread On Me” flag, flies high above an E-2C Hawkeye on the flight deck of USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the aircraft carrier transited the Straits of Malacca Feb. 15.  Kitty Hawk and embarked Carrier Air Wing 5 remain mission-ready to respond to emergent national tasking where needed, and were recently ordered to the Central Command area of responsibility to join coalition forces preparing for possible operations in that area.

ABOARD USS KITTY HAWK AT SEA (Jan. 06, 2003) -- Aviation boatswain’s fuels personnel from air department perform stretcher-bearer training during flight deck drills. These simulated drills are necessary for the readiness of the crew in the event of an actual casualty. Kitty Hawk is the world’s only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier and operates out of Yokosuka, Japan.

ABOARD USS KITTY HAWK AT SEA (Jan. 06, 2003) -- Lt. Tom Stanley of Kankakee, Ill., signals for return of the shuttle while directing steam catapult testing. Before steam catapults are used to launch aircraft, pre-tests called ”no loads” are performed to properly calibrate the pressure needed for successful launches.
