Ratings Guide
by Alexa

Every piece of fanfiction you write should be rated. Why? So it gives the reader an idea of what kind of content they're getting into. We don't want a ten year old accidentally stumbling onto a would-be NC-17 rated piece. So be helpful, and rate your work. Most fanfiction on the internet uses the US movie rating system, as set by the MPAA Guidelines, but some is rated using UK or Australian ratings.

Wondering how you should rate your fanfiction? Just follow these guidelines.

G: General reading. There should be nothing offensive. It should be able to be read to a child. No violence, references sexual content, or language. This is UK equivalent of U.

PG: Parental guidance recomended for children under the age of 13. Some material may be inappropriate for children. It may contain kissing, but no sexual scenes. No strong language, maybe a little bit of action. Violence is moderate. The first three Harry Potter (PS/SS, CoS, & PoA) books would be rated at this level.

PG-13: Some material may be inappropriate for those under 13. There may be some language and action, and light violence. Light sexual content, such as fade to black scenes, are allowed. This is UK equivalent of UK-12 and the Australian equivalent of M. The last two Harry Potter (GoF & OoTP) books would be rated at this level.

R: Restricted. For mature fanfiction. Sex, though not too detailed, is present. Action, violence, death, strong language, et cetera, appear here. This is UK equivalent of UK-15 and the Australian equivalent of MA.

NC-17: Restricted to people over the age of 18. This is for strictly adult fic, such as fics with explicit sex scenes and graphic details. Excessive violence, strong language, and adult themes may also appear. This is UK equivalent of UK-18 and the Australian equivalent of R.
