UMD political science major and communication minor David Lislegard joined the cast of the film North Country. The story is based on the true life experiences of a Minnesota woman (played by Charlize Theron) and her class action lawsuit against a mining company.
Richard L. Quinn. Sculpture by John David Mooney Erected at UMD:
The 89-foot high sculpture titled "Wild Ricing Moon" by internationally known sculptor and leading environmental artist, John David Mooney, is being erected just outside the new James I. Swenson Science building on UMD's campus. The sculpture was constructed at the BendTec company in Duluth.

- Earthquake Victims: On the morning of October 8, 2005, an earthquake struck in Pakistan, causing utter devastation throughout the region. Funds to assist the victims are being raised by the UMD International Club, led by 12 students from Karachi, Pakistan. The quake, which measured 7.6, has been called one of the deadliest quakes in modern times
- New Rain Garden: The garden demonstrates a pleasant solution to storm water run-off from a large parking lot. It helps protect Oregon Creek and Lake Superior by slowing, cooling, and filtering water.
- James I Swenson Building Opens: The new UMD $33 million, 89,000-square-foot science building that opened this fall is named for Jim Swenson, a 1959 UMD chemistry graduate of UMD. Over 2,500 students use the building each week, taking primarily biology and chemistry courses.
