The Role of a Councillor

The Council of the Shire of Esk, (sometimes referred to as Esk Shire Council), consists of eleven elected members being the Mayor and 10 councillors.

Queensland's Local Government Act, 1993 states that the roles of a Local Government Councillor are generally -
bulletrepresents the overall public interest of the local government's area and, if the councillor is a councillor for a division of the area, also represents the public interest of the division; and
bullettakes part in deciding the facilities, services and enterprises that are appropriate for the area; and
bullettakes part in formulating, adopting and reviewing -
bulletthe local government's corporate plan and operational plans; and
bulletthe policies and goals of the local government; and
bullettakes part in making decisions for achieving the goals and implementing the policies of the local government.
Please note that the Shire of Esk is not divided for electoral purposes (i.e. there are no electoral wards or divisions) and therefore the Mayor and each Councillor represents every citizen in the Shire. Quadrennial elections are usually held on the last Saturday in March. Party Politics has not been introduced into the Council.

The Council has three standing committees which meet monthly at the following times -
 
Planning & Economic Development Committee Second Wednesday of each month commencing at 9.00 am
Works, Health & Environment Committee Fourth Wednesday of each month commencing at 9.00 am
Administration & Finance Committee Fourth Wednesday of each month commencing at 9.00 am
Ordinary meetings of the Council are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month commencing at 1.00 pm.
