from Philosophy of Science" Vol. 29. No. 2, April 1962.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
by Steve Bayne

Born in Cologne/Rhine Germany in 1923. Prof. Adolf Grunbaum first became seriously interested in philosophy at the age of twelve after being impressed by Aristotle's views on cause. Shortly afterwards he read Schopenhaur whose style of writing, by contrast with that of Kant and Hegel, he found much to his liking. By age 13 he had become sceptical of the claims of religion, and continued his pursuit of philosophy. At age 14 he arrived in the United States and, in 1943, graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut with high honors in both mathematics and philosophy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in a number of capacities. Among them was the role of interrogator. Among those he interrogatedm, suspected of collaborating with the Nazi regime, was the well known mathematician, who was said to have taught classes in Nazi uniform. In 1949, he received a Ph.D from Yale and married Thelma Braverman, whom he met in Brooklyn as a high school student. They have a daughter, Barbara, whose interest in photography led to a graduate degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. Along with Carl Hempel, who was called by his friends "Peter," Prof. Grunbaum built a Philosophy Department of great renown at the University of Pittsburgh. He shared with Hempel an enormous respect for Hans Reichenbach whose work was central to how logical positivists interpreted the revolution in physics. Reichenbach had been a student of Einstein, and Hempel had been a student of Reichenbach's. In 1963, Prof. Grunbaum published the work for which he is probably most well known, "Philosophical Problems of Space and Time. Besides Hempel, Grunbaum has been a close working partner of other well known philosophers such as Wilfrid Sellars, Ruth Marcus, Richard Gale, Wesley Salmon, Jose Alberto Coffa, Robert S. Cohen and many many others. In addition to his work on problems in the philosophy of physics, since the 1970s Grunbaum has contributed heavily to the examination of the work of Sigmund Freud. Despite the fact that, as a Jew, he experienced persecution in his native Germany and was compelled to flee he appreciatively accepted an invitation in 2002 to deliver the Leibniz Lectures at the University of Hannover. Hist-Analytic would like thank Prof. Grunbaum for supplying much of the material for this page, and for his permission to "webify" one his most important papers. Soon, perhaps, additional papers will be included along with it. Those who wish to pursue at greater length the details of Grunbaum's remarkable life and contributions to philosophy should consult his autobiography, which is to be found in Philosophy of Physics and Psychology: Essays in Honor of Adolf Grunbaum edited by A Jokic, Amherst, NY, Prometheus Press. 2005.
