LOU DOBBSColumnist - award winning television journalist - "Corporate greed is shipping American jobs overseas."
BERNIE SANDERSMember of Congress (I-VT) - "The time for playing nice with corporate outsourcers and their enablers in government is over. George Bush's suggestion that the nation's record trade deficit can be resolved by people buying more U.S. products shows how out of touch he is with the economic reality most Americans face. While the stark reality of America's industrial might moving abroad may have escaped the president and his economic advisers, a growing number of members of Congress see with their own eyes the devastating effect that the president's trade policy is having on manufacturing jobs in their own districts. Congress must repeal Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China and develop trade policies that protect and create good-paying jobs in America."
ALAN TONELSONResearch fellow at the United States Business & Industry Council Educational Foundation - "The United States should use its economic clout to shape trade policies to protect its manufacturing core and jobs that pay middle-class wages."
JIM SCHOLLAERTDirector of Strategic Outreach for the American Manufacturing and Trade Action Coalition (AMTAC) - “Since the end of 2000, we’ve lost about 2.5 million manufacturing jobs… Companies have no loyalty to the country. Their loyalty is to the bottom line. Executives are making huge profits, and companies are detaching from this nation. The American way of life doesn’t matter anymore.”
PAT BUCHANANWriter, Economist, Former Presidential candidate - "Free Trade is the serial killer of American manufacturing and the Trojan Horse of world government. It is the path to the loss of economic independence and national sovereignty. Free Trade is a bright and shining lie."
MARCY KAPTURMember of Congress (D-OH) - "I don't want to pull down American workers to Chinese standards. I want to raise nations up to where you have free trade among free people."
LISA BRONSONPentagon Technology Security Director - "China has somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 front companies in the US, their sole reason for existing is to steal, exploit US techonology. China has an aggressive military modernization progam and we're concerned... and that's probably going to be one of the biggest challenges in the combination of the counterintelligence and technology security world in the next five or 10 years."
WARREN BUFFETTSecond wealthiest man in United States - "Americas growing free trade deficit is selling the nation out from under us."
HOWARD PHILLIPSChairman of the Conservative Caucus, Former Presidential candidate - "Free Trade is a failure. It's time for tariffs."
PAUL SAMUELSONNoble Laureate Economist - "American workers lose from the outsourcing of American jobs to cheap foreign labor markets".
ALAN GREENSPANFederal Reserve Chairman - Has come around to seeing America's growing trade deficit is a problem. After years of stunning silence on the subject, the Federal Chairman now says foreigners may dump dollars unless the U.S. brings its accounts into balance.
ROSS PEROTFormer Presidential Candidate - On North American Free Trade Agreement, "That great sucking sound is the jobs leaving".
GEORGE MALONESenator, Nevada - "The global theory of free trade is siphoning off America’s wealth and bringing her economy to the level of others. The theory is displacing American workers who would otherwise be employed." [1958]
BILL PAULYEducator - "The truth is, the free trade theory works only when climate, natural resources, and physical features are major factors. When wage rates, capital, and technologies are the major factors, the country with the lowest wage rate has a crushing advantage."
JOSEPH S. MAYERPresident and general counsel of Copper and Brass Fabricators Council (CBFC) - “The policies and practices of the Chinese government have had a destructive impact on world trade, and particularly on the US copper industry. Chinese Government ownership and control, preferential tax treatment, customs fraud, disregard for the global copper market, and currency manipulation are a lethal combination and have unfairly increased the cost of doing business for those of us who practice integrity in such matters.”
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTSEconomist - "The 'New Economy' is being outsourced faster than the old manufacturing economy."
JONATHAN LARSON Writer, Historian - "Free trade is a dimbulb British idea and those who believe it should be considered enemies of the country - Torys with an allegiance to a philosophy of a foreign power. From now on, we should spell "traders" as t-r-a-i-t-o-r-s so as not to confuse anyone. Free traitors are in the end, enemies of democracy. If they were not, they would welcome an open debate on the issues, not try to pass their legislation on a 'fast track' in the darkness of secrecy."
ABRAHAM LINCOLNPresident - Summed up the sentiment especially well when deciding to purchase railroad tracks. "If we buy the steel from Britain, we have the steel but the money is gone. If we buy the steel in the United States, we have the steel and the money, too. Such an advantage far outweighs a lower price for imported steel."
KARL MARXSocialist Revolutionary - "Free trade breaks up old nationalities… In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. Gentlemen, I am in favor of Free trade!"
BEN MILESInventor, Farmer - "The theory is, free trade allows access to low cost consumer goods and therefore improve the standard of living faster than wages increase. Also, that workers who lost their jobs to imported foreign products would quickly find other jobs and that the trade deficit would decrease. That is, we are better off and have a higher standard of living due to free trade. Wrong, none of this has happened in America."
ROBERT DAVISPlant Manager - "The U.S. has lost 3,000,000 private sector jobs in 3 years with no signs of a let up. In 2003, the payroll jobs were down to 130.3 millions, the lowest in 4 years. The average hours worked was 34; the lowest number since the government started keeping track in 1964. There are over 15,000,000 unemployed. The number of under employed is also huge. Not since the depression have we lost jobs 3 years in a row. This was caused by Free Trade."
DOUGLAS WHITEDirector of Research - "The Japanese think the ideas of free trade are primitive nonsense. While we preach to them about free trade, they organize their industry. Even the sacred cow of free traders, the stock exchange, is routinely manipulated in Japan for the benefit of their industry. Industrial development is about planning, the antithesis of Adam Smith's 'invisible hand' of the market."
DEN BLACKEngineer - "The academic and economic elites only view the world as consumers, never as producers. Engaging in useful work is considered beneath contempt so the problems of production are certainly beyond scholarly consideration."
THOMAS JEFFERSONPresident - “He, therefore, who is now against domestic manufacture, must be fore reducing us either to dependence on that foreign nation, or to be clothed in skins, and to live like beasts in dens and caverns. I am not one of these.”
THEODORE ROOSEVELT,
DWIGHT EISENHOWER,
RONALD REAGAN
Presidents - Supported protecting American industries and jobs.
