Today, the Delphi Corporation, the largest US auto parts manufacturer filed for bankruptcy.
This isn’t the end of the horror story. The same forces that drove Delphi into bankruptcy threaten not only other auto parts makers, but the entire American automobile industry.
General Motors, Ford and Daimler Chrysler are losing U.S. market share. Japanese, Europeans and Koreans all increased their market share. We will soon be importing Chinese autos, priced below ten thousand dollars.
General Motors plans to purchase $10 billion of auto parts from China over the next five years. These parts are currently being made by Americans – your neighbors, maybe even your relatives.
No American industry front loaded with the cost of regulations fees and taxes and paying American wage rates can compete with Chinese prices.
The current Administration says wants you to believe outsourcing is good for America. They think Delphi’s problem is that American workers earn too much.
They’re really saying the American worker is obsolete since the Chinese will work for less.
No American expects American workers to work for Chinese wages.
To save the automobile industries we must abandon the failed policies of free trade. We must cancel NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO. We must impose trade balancing tariffs to ensure the continued existence of American industries and American jobs.
