Unfortunately, senior members of the Bush administration have indicated privately that bankruptcies in the auto industry aren’t too much to worry about. They view the bankruptcies in steel, with the resulting job losses and capacity reduction, as a good thing.

This is destroying the middle class, for work is the only source of income. Without jobs, Americans lose homes, cars, health care and pensions. And the loss of income destroys family bonds and can cause increased domestic violence, alcoholism and divorce.

“We’re facing the bankruptcy of Delphi and the downsizing of the American automobile industry – one of the foundations of our middle class society - and there is a deafening silence from Washington.”

“What happened to ‘government for the people’? I was wrong when I said no American expects Americans to work for Chinese wages. The corporate elite, senior members of the Bush Administration and their supporters in Congress encourage Chinese imports.”

“To save the automobile industries we must abandon the failed policies of free trade. We must cancel NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO. We must impose trade balancing tariffs to ensure the continued existence of American industries and American jobs”.
