Interfaces

My research interests lie in the field of interface science. More specifically and currently, it involves that segment of interface science in which electrons cross the interface.

This still encompasses a wide area of inquiry, in much of which I have a considerable interest. However, in recent years my laboratory has concentrated on the dynamics of metal oxidation in aqueous electrolyte solutions. This chemistry outside of the laboratory involves corrosion of metals, recovery of metals from solution, and electrochemical energy storage systems, i.e., batteries. I am concerned with the science of such systems, especially corrosion, and its use in actual practice.

While the practice in this field is of long standing (for example Robert Boyle wrote about it), and the art of corrosion control of metals is well established, there remains much about the processes which remains unknown. The advent of increasingly inquisitive and sensitive instrumentation in the last few decades provide interesting possibilities for greater insight into the chemical and physical processes. This, in turn, affords fine opportunities to make even more effective applications.
