Welcome to the Mount St. Helens Teacher's Corner
Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument was established, in part, to promote
environmental and science education. Each year, thousands of students travel to
Mount St. Helens to see the dramatic effects of the 1980 volcanic eruption, and
how plants and animals have responded.
Our Teacher's Corner web site is designed to provide environmental and science
education information that is clear, useful, and usable for teachers and students
alike. We want you to know more about Mount St. Helens before, during and after
your visit. Here you can register online if you want to visit Mount St. Helens
and you can choose from a variety of suggested itineraries and projects for your
field trip.
Come Visit the Volcano
The majority of groups travel to Coldwater
Ridge Visitor Center and Johnston
Ridge Observatory on Washington State Route 504. Other schools visit attractions
on the Monument's South and East sides including the Lahar
Viewpoint, Ape Cave, the Trail
of Two Forests, and Windy Ridge. All of these areas offer different educational
opportunities and experiences.
We can help you with what to bring on your visit, and what not to bring!
We can even tell you the best places to have lunch, all with great views, too.
Online Library
There is also an extensive library of geological and natural
background information here, too. We also have some brand new digital
images from NASA, including a simulated Mount St. Helens flyby created from
NASA satellite resources. So even if you cannot make it to the Mountain, we'll
bring the Mountain to you!
Building this Site
This is our first major overhaul of the Teacher's Corner web site in several
years. We've greatly expanded our educational materials,
background information and general visit information.
We've incorporated resources from other places so you don't have to travel far
to find it. We have additional resource links if you want to study further. We
have more expansion plans down the road, but we need your help!
Looking for More Information?
Your comments about our educational opportunities, your planned visit and
this web site are important to us. Also, we're open to ideas and suggestions about
this site and our education programs. We welcome
your comments and suggestions.
