Biggest Pharmaceutical Plant to Open Soon

Tehran, P.I.N., 2007/02/05

TEHRAN--Head of Iran’s Pasteur Institute, Abdolhossein Rouholamini Najafabadi announced on Saturday that the biggest pharmaceutical complex in southwest Asia to produce new compound drugs will soon become operational in Iran.
Rouholamini Najafabadi told Fars that the new pharmaceutical complex includes production lines of vaccines such as hepatitis-B, erythropoietin, alfa interferon and streptokinase.
He noted that Iran will become a pioneer in pharmaceutical biotechnology know-how.
“National pharmaceutical complex producing new compound drug products comprises different pharmaceutical biotechnological industrial units that can produce new protein drug compounds at an industrial scale,“ he said.
He pointed out that the new compound drug products are produced in three distinct methods. “Firstly, fermentation of yeasts. Secondly, bacteria technology. Thirdly, by using animal cells,“ Rouholamini Najafabadi added.
He stated that many pharmaceutical and biotechnological products can be produced by these three methods in addition to the four basic products mentioned above.
“By gaining access to technical know-how of the new compound drug products, a large number of biotechnological drug products can be produced domestically in an industrial scale and according to acceptable international standards,“ he added.
He further noted that the new compound drug products of Iranian Pasteur Institute can be exported even to European countries once necessary permits are obtained.
“Production of hepatitis-B vaccine as first product started since one month ago in the complex. More than one million dose of hepatitis-B vaccine has been produced until now. This pharmaceutical complex is capable of producing 16 million doses of hepatitis-B vaccine, 300,000 doses of erythropoietin, 1.5 million doses of alfa interferon and 120,000 doses of streptokinase in one shift of work per year from next year,“ Rouholamini Najafabadi added.
He pointed out that quality control and laboratory animals sections in the complex are unique in southwest Asian region.
