The first is the classic and often referenced "Communication Theory
of Secrecy Systems" by Claude
Shannon that appeared in the Bell
System Technical Journal, Vol 28, Oct 1949, pgs 656-715.
The second is an article written by Horst Feistel, a member of the IBM
team that developed the Lucifer and DES ciphers. Originally published
in Scientific American magazine
in May, 1973, pgs 15-23, the article focuses on machine encryption.
His development of the "Feistel Network" is the basis of many encryption
schemes that are currently in use.
