Lindesay Electric LEStuff

Overview

LEStuff is a set of frameworks and libraries developed by Andrew Lindesay centred around commercial projects that Andrew works on. The concept behind the collection of frameworks and libraries is that clients will allow material that is generic and not specific to their business to be subject for inclusion in the project and in this way, they can reach achieve an economy of scale around basic infrastructure within their projects. Clients will generally get more out than they put in and therefore be in a better position then if they had to research and develop various aspects of the project from scratch. Probably the most significant body of work in the project relates to general underlying framework for constructing sophisticated applications atop the WebObjects application server from Apple.

Open Source

LEStuff is distributed under a BSD-style open-source license which is included in the distribution. There is no public source-repository for the project and there is no means of directly modifying the project source code. There have been a number of reasons why the project is distributed as open-source. Firstly, clients are generally happier if they have the source code and this is an important reason for easy acceptance in commercial projects. Secondly, the international WebObjects community is relatively small and sophisticated. There is a strong sense of community and spirit of cooperation and for this reason there is a significant deal of code sharing going on in this area and Andrew Lindesay sees this as a contribution to this community.
