Welcome!

Welcome to fanwork archive of The Basilisk Cafe - a place where intelligent Tom Riddle/Slytherin fans can share their fanfiction and fanart of our favourite Dark Lord with others of the Slytherin persuasion...

The artwork and fanfiction showcased in this archive is just that - showcased. It is not our property, and it is only hosted here by the kind permission of the artist/author who created it. Do Not Take. Any copyright inherent in any of these works is retained by the creator. (Which includes the copyright to the original HP Universe, which is of course the property of JK Rowling.)

And now, the end is near...

...and so we face the final curtain.  Or the final book, at any rate - that's right, after 10 years, 7 books, 5 films, and more money than you could normally obtain by legal means, the Harry Potter saga is finally coming to an end.  Specifically, it's coming to an end this summer, when the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.  But let's face it - you knew all that already.  You'll probably also know that this ending of the series bodes fairly ill for our favourite Dark Lord - these are, after all, children's books, and he is the bad guy.  The end of the series rarely ends well for those.

So, since it looks like we're going to see Lord Voldemort cast into an unwanted and much-feared oblivion, we thought we might as well take matters into our own hands, and do it our own way.  If Voldemort must die, then it will be at our hands first, and please spare us the innuendo, just this once.  Your challenge for this contest is to write or draw the demise of Lord Voldemort.  You can do it in any way you please - it can be funny, emotional, sympathetic, dramatic, tragic, anything you like.  You can have him blasting his foes right until the end, or you can have him repenting before suffering a Ministry-enforced snog with a Dementor.  It's all down to you.

As usual, the full details of the contest, along with a small list of potential challenges for you, can be found at our Contest Page, but the description above should tell you just about all you need to know.  Entries should be uploaded to the correct category - 'Contest Entries > FanArt' or 'Contest Entries > FanFic' - with 'Voldemort's Demise Contest' in the description/author's notes, by Sunday 1st April. Good luck, everyone!

Archives Upgraded!

As you can probably tell from the way that just about everything around here has changed, we've been busy over the last few days, resulting in this - the archives have been upgraded to the new efiction 3.1!  We're still finding new features every few minutes or so, but here's some of the highlights to whet your whistle...

  • We now have a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor enabled for the archives - meaning you can now add formatting, bullet points, indenting, dividers, links and much more at the touch of a button!  And of course, it includes that most important of buttons - Undo.
  • There's also now a captcha script enabled throughout the archive, which should make it a little more difficult for those irritating spambots to make a nuisance of themselves...
  • Enhanced statistics, including chapter and word counts for the front page, and read counts for individual stories.
  • Enhanced Profile pages, giving space for you to link to accounts at DeviantArt, LiveJournal and MySpace.
  • Enhanced Preferences page, giving you, our members, more control over how you view the archive.
  • Enhanced Support Pages, which we'll be working on further over the next few weeks...
  • Support for co-authoring of stories.

You'll also have noticed that the skin has changed - our old default skin, Marauders, isn't available for 3.x - but we'll be working on a more TBC-specific skin in the near future.  In the meantime, take a look around, and enjoy the spangly newness!

Contest Voting!
Well, the End-of-Year Contest has closed it's doors - at the end of last year, funnily enough - which means that it's now voting time. The usual contest thread is open on our forums, so please check out the contents of the 'Contest Entries' category, and then go and make your voice heard!

End-of-Year Contest!
Since we've not had ourselves a proper contest since the summer, we couldn't let the year end without one more little burst of creativity, now could we? So, we're running another one of our little contests for everyone to enter over these long, cold winter nights...

Check our Contest page for more details, but this particular competition is a simple one - you'll find a list of 30 seasonal prompts on the page, and we're looking for fanwork that includes Tom/Voldemort, and any 2 of the prompts on that page. Other than that, the usual rules apply. You've got nearly 4 weeks - until Saturday 30th December - to put your entries together, so better check out the prompts quick!

Good luck, and we can't wait to see some results!

Regarding Reviews
Unfortunately, we have been forced to make a change to the archive's policies today - from now on, it will not be possible to review work anonymously. This is because the anonymous review feature has been targetted by spambots, and systematically abused by them, to the point where over 50 spam reviews were posted in a single day.

We realise that this will make it a little harder for people to leave feedback, and this is something we deeply regret. On the other hand, allowing the site to be overrun by spammers helps nobody, so we think this is the lesser of two evils. If we can reverse this decision in the future, we will do so. In the meantime, we encourage anyone who visits to sign up for a membership, even if it's only a reader account, used to place reviews.
