Doppelganger - The Lounge goes to beta !
The above more or less describes what we're doing,
but i can give a few other interesting Torque-related tidbits:

We're running a fairly heavily modified TGE 1.3, with most of TLK 1.4 back-ported in, and much advice from the Garage Games community gratefully included.

We went into beta about ten days ago, and since then have had one server running with a steady simultaneous user-load of 40 to 100 players! I think 110 is our record so far.

The toon/cell-shading on the characters is shader-free, and was written by Clint Brewer. It's similar to other methods described on GG, but different, too.

re Doppelganger, I can't over-agree enough with "the art and engineering teams are kick-ass", so if you know top-shelf folks who are looking for work in San Francisco, this is a fantastic team.

This looks like one of the most polished games on TGE to date, really nice!

This looks really great, I saw the forum thread on it about a week ago and was looking forward to the official announcement. Congrats on getting into BETA!

Off to check out the "jobs" page! :-)

finally you put up a devshot! looks great.

I hope everyone goes and logs on now, I wanna see what happens when 300 people get on the servers muahahah!!

Orion and Everyone there have been really great to work with.

I never knew that synchronized midget robot dancing could make me laugh so hard...

Fun :)

I was just mentioning something like this to my BF some weeks ago. We was talking about that it would not be long before chatting, flirting and checking up would come as a "game" - and here it is *s*

Offcourse ppl chat in all mmo, but this seems more focused on that part then other mmo communetys. I am sure it will be a hit. Gratz on getting to beta stage, and good luck with future relase. :)

Hey Orion, wow great gig! :) Great use of light too - I really like the feel of the environment.

Interesting that so many german words (Doppelganger) find their way into the english language.

Nice looking app!

Looks really nice Orion, I had been wondering what you were working on. I think TGE is perfectly suited for that project, and I'm surprised the whole virtual community, music content, ad's on walls, and "TV" screens in the lobby concept hasn't been done already.. I think it's a great idea that would appeal to the masses. It makes me curious to see what the public response will be when you get it completed.

As a compliment, better than There or Second Life even in beta. My only wish would be to see the dance moves linked to the tempo of the song currently playing.

I think you guys already have the right on what makes a game like this fun and I don't doubt that this game will be a success.
Sage   (Jun 03, 2006 at 06:14 GMT)
Oh, and the number of internet-integrated games that I've seen in the past year lead me to think that advertising and e-business are truly going to change the face of the way we play. Any plans to link the track names to MSN music or the like?
Matthew Langley   (Jun 03, 2006 at 06:57 GMT)
I was really impressed by this!
Mark   (Jun 03, 2006 at 16:06 GMT)
This looks fantastic.

I just played it actually, and I'm really happy to see something like this, great art direction - and I really see this sort of thing getting VERY far in today's musical/social world. I will be watching this project very closely.

I have a few screencaps from my short little journey. Sorry about the image size, photobucket likes to resize them lately.

Great work guys. Great great great work.

OHH It's you Orion, lol, I didnt even see the uploader username, GREAT JOB!!!

Sage   (Jun 03, 2006 at 20:48 GMT)
Oh, in answer to my last comments, it looks like you already have linked to Buy.com to download tracks. Spiffy!
Vashner   (Jun 04, 2006 at 02:59 GMT)
Looks smart and clean. I think it's gonna be a hit.
Devon Ly   (Jun 04, 2006 at 07:38 GMT)
Woah I tried this last night. It's a great use to the Torque technology. Love your choice of music too.
Justin O'Brien   (Jun 04, 2006 at 16:39 GMT)

Man, that celshading looks so nice.

Hey All !

Thanks for the good words !

I should point out that i'm just one very small part of a team of twenty or so very talented people putting this thing together. - I just happen to be the one who cruises the Garage Games site most, so i posted the devshot..

Hege - yeah, that's sort of our thinking too. So many people play MMU's just to socialize, it seemed like a good idea to just focus on that!

Sage - we've tossed around the idea of linking dance speed (and/or style) to the music tempo, i hope we'll be able to get it in there in the next couple months. re linking directly to music sales - yep, we've got linking to buy.com, but it's pretty informal now. We're not even tracking the clicks. But we will be !

Mark - re "great art direction" - absolutely. the environment and character artists here are tops; it's a real luxury to be able to work with such talented folks. Thanks for posting more screenshots, too !

Please keep the criticisms and suggestions coming in, feedback from the GG community is especially appreciated since it's generally informed and thoughtful!

Thanks again!
See you in the Lounge !
T Squared   (Jun 09, 2006 at 00:21 GMT)
Wow, this looks really nice. very professional. Good Job Orion
Orion Elenzil   (Jun 09, 2006 at 01:08 GMT)
hey T-Squared.
funny, like ten minutes ago a coworker send me a snapshot of you & rooster chatting in the lounge!

thanks for the compliments.

believe me tho, any kudos need to go to the whole team here - i'm just the guy who posted the dev-snapshot.
T Squared   (Jun 09, 2006 at 16:02 GMT)
lol rooster eh? thats cool. ya, i think your game will be very successfull. you and your team did a fantastic job, i really love the models and animations. looks very professional on top of that, the idea is the strongest seller. i've seen many online games like this before, but they they werent nearly as good as this. Hope the best of luck to you and your team members.

BTW, you guys should really take your game to the IGF. also what was the dev time on this game?
Orion Elenzil   (Jun 09, 2006 at 16:34 GMT)
the dev time was about ten months, maybe.
but we grew from maybe a dozen to thirty or so people over that time,
and all of them are highly skilled and basically focused on this one product.
so it represents a bit of work.
