Lamzdelis

Traditional lamzdelis, a shepherd wind instrument, is made from bark or wood. It has 3 – 9 sound holes and is usually tuned in major mode. Its repertoire entails shepherd quavers – recitatives (width of a third) and trills– virtuoso improvisations, songs, sutartinės and dances. Lamzdelis was first mentioned in J.Bretkūnas’ writings (1580).

The ensemble’s orchestra employs upgraded chromatic lamzdeliai, made from ebonite; diapason c2 – g4 (notated an octave lower). The instrument is extremely flexible technically; it is most apt in performance of playful music. There are works for solo lamzdelis with folk instrument accompaniment. Lamzdelis is usually played by birbynė soloists (as a second instrument).
