Drummer and Percussionist
Hamburg, Germany
Thomas Altmann, born in Hamburg /Germany in 1954, is active as a professional musician since 1979. He looks back on a many-sided experience as a drum set player and as a percussionist as well.
- As a drum set player he specializes in all traditional styles of Jazz, from Ragtime and New Orleans style, Chicago style Dixieland and Swing, to modern Be-Bop drumming.
- As a percussionist who is steeped in the Cuban school, his instruments are principally the congas, bongos, and timbales, the batá, and the shekere. In popular, folkloric, and in religious Afro-Cuban music he is virtually at home.
- In both of these fields he is a renowned teacher. In addition, he is the author of the book Cantos Lucumí a los Orichas and wrote several liner notes for the American earthcds label.
- As a batá drummer he was initiated as an omoañá (Santería ceremonial drummer) in the tambor "Aña Ara Lovo Ore" in Havana, Cuba, in 2005.
