Dexcon VII: BOOTLEGGED

Venue Information - Food and Drink

The Bishop and Belcher, as many of you know, has moved and no longer has the basement. This year, the first two nights will be held at the Fiddler's Green, which has reserved us their second floor for Friday and Saturday. The pub is right across the street from Wellsley Station, at Yonge. There are several hotels fairly close by, and best of all, it's not too close to the centre of Caribana action.

Sunday, the formal will most likely be held at Big Daddy's, a cajun restaurant downtown on King St.

The Monday night of the con will be at the Yellow Griffin Pub, because that's the other place that Dex' has already prepaid any possible booking fees via his drinking and liver over the years. Since it is across from Dex' apartment, people who are leaving from the airport on Tuesday are welcome to drop off their baggage there on Monday.

Venue Information - Accomodations

People are still responsible for their own accomodations (booking and payment). We are also working on the possibility of an official con hotel.

This year's pub, the Fiddler's Green, is located at Yonge and Wellsley, downtown. It is actually quite close to the university, and one possibility for rooms is summer rentals there. If anyone else has suggestions we're happy to hear them. It isn't that close to either the Alexandria or the Holiday Inn on King, and it's quite a hike from the Global Village hostel.

Previous years' hotels and accomodation information:

The Hostel:

Global Village Backpackers Hostel - the hostel is on the corner of Spadina and King.

The Global Backpackers Village hostel is an old hotel that has been turned into a hostel. It isn't glamorous, but has the advantage of being cheap, close, clean, and versatile. The rooms hold bunks in dormitory fashion, and most rooms are co-ed. There are shared washroom and shower facilities and a bit of a sitting room to meet in. There's a cheap bar downstairs that serves until 2:30, and will let you buy pitchers at last call to last the rest of the night. Basically, it's a student thing.

Those staying at the hostel are advised to bring their own towels, because the ones provided are both thin and small. Also, I'd suggest flipflops, sandels or shower shoes. The hostel has a nighttime security system, so those returning after 11pm will have to get the daily security code before leaving. The area we typically stay in got air conditioning as of last year, however it's not as efficient as one might hope. It's still better than nothing.

Hotel Options:

Holiday Inn On King - the previous hotel venue for Dexcon, this hotel has become a little pricey (the main reason other alternatives are being offered). However, it's reasonable accomodations only three blocks from the hostel.

The rooms are comfortable, if not glamorous, and have all the comforts of a hotel. Each room has it's own bathroom with a bath/shower, a coffeepot, fridge, television, and phone facilities. All room charges will be billed directly to the person in the room, and not the room itself. Those must be settled on check-out.

Check-In is officially three in the afternoon, and check out is at noon. However, the staff have always proved to be very understanding and accommodating for people who arrive earlier or are delayed leaving. The shuttlebus to the airport leaves directly from the hotel itself, and there is regular cab service. The hotel also contains a pool, sauna, workout room, several bars, a restaurant, and coffee shop.

Weston Harbour Castle - this hotel is right on the waterfront, about twenty minutes away from the hostel. It is also quite pricey, but there may be deals available.

Toronto Hilton - the Hilton is roughly fifteen minutes away from the hostel.

Hotel Victoria - the Hotel Victoria is about fifteen to twenty minutes away from the hostel, near the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto.

Intercontinental - the Intercontinental is about five to ten minutes away from the hostel, on Front Street.

The Alexandra Hotel - the Alexandra is reasonably priced, about fifteen to twenty minutes away from the hostel.
