At least ninety-nine (99) candidates nationwide will contest the forthcoming National Assembly elections of January 25 2007, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has finally confirmed.
According to the IEC, the ruling APRC party nominated 48 candidates, in which 5 candidates are unopposed, thereby duly elected as National Assembly Members, while 43 are to contest in the 48 constituencies throughout the country. “ The NADD has 5 candidates to contest, NRP has 8 candidates, while UDP has 29 candidates and 9 other Independent candidates,” the release stated. The release added that four Independent candidates have so far withdrawn their candidature to contest the elections in accordance with Section 51 of Decree 78 of 1996. One hundred and three candidates, the release stated, were duly nominated at the closure of the receipt of their nominations on Saturday 6 January 2007. Similarly, the IEC further announced that Mr Njaga Jammeh, Independent candidate for Banjul South Constituency for the National Assembly elections of January 25 2007, has finally withdrawn his candidature for the said elections, and that his withdrawal has been duly completed, signed and accepted by the Returning Officer for Banjul Administrative Area. Therefore, two candidates, Alhagie Baboucarr Sheikh Nyang will contest for the APRC and Azziz Pa Boy Fraser, for the UDP in Banjul South Constituency, respectively.
