Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) will endorse Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) on Monday, Democratic sources tell Politico.com.

Bayh is a moderate Democrat whose blessing could help Clinton pick up votes in Republican states.

Indiana is among the most reliably Republican states — “the reddest of the red,” as one Democratic official put it. The Hoosier State went 57 percent for George W. Bush in 2000 and 60 percent for President Bush’s reelection in 2004.

Clinton’s campaign is clearly thrilled to be getting the nod.

“Hillary Clinton to Receive Major National Endorsement on Monday,” said a release from the campaign this evening. The news conference is at 1 p.m. at a hotel on Capitol Hill.

Bayh, a former chair of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, had sought the Democratic nomination himself but abandoned his quest in December in the face of the strong machines being built by Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

At the time, Bayh said in a statement: “The odds were always going to be very long for a relatively unknown candidate like myself, a little bit like David and Goliath.”

Bayh, who had already been oft-discussed as a promising potential vice presidential pick for Clinton, had held back on endorsing her in part because of doubts about her popularity in Indiana, Democratic sources said.

His endorsement could help undermine the argument of her rivals for the Democratic nomination that she would not be electable in a national contest.

Clinton and Bayh serve together on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

In January, they appeared at a news conference together after a congressional-delegation visit to armed forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Clinton, noting that she and Bayh sat next to each other on Armed Services, announced then that she and Bayh were sending a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates “reflecting what we heard from our military commanders: they asked for additional troops.”

In March, Clinton was endorsed by former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, who had ended his Democratic presidential campaign a month before. Earlier this month, she was endorsed by retired four-star Army Gen. Wesley Clark, who ran for the Democratic nomination in 2004 and considered doing so again this year.

With Mark Warner out of the picture for a VP spot, Bayh would be a good VP pick. He probably doesn't have enough coattails to swing a state like Indiana, but still it would be a good balanced ticket.

He probably won't get the nod tho, since his senate seat would probably swing to the republicans in a special election and Chuck Schumer would never stand for that. Same reason why Democrats would rather take a Senate seat in Virginia than give Hillary the VP that would undoubtedly ensure her a win.

That is great! I like both the Senators and hope that he is on the short list for the Vice Presidency! Clinton has both her "neighbors" on the Armed Services endorsing her. Pryor (AR) and now Bayh (IN)

This shows that "Red State" Democrats, like Sen. Pryor and Sen. Bayh think well and high of Clinton and are looking forward to supporting her for the White House. Good Luck Hillary.

Speaking of Clinton winning back red states... There is a new general election poll from Iowa! It is also turning blue again, as Dems lead all matchups!

I for one can't help but laugh. Here it is ONE year and some months away from election day and NOT ONE vote has being cast in any of the Primaries or by any registered voter and the Democrats and the Liberal mainstream media are already rejoicing and crowning as President the most inept and least qualified person seeking the Presidency in 100 years. Talk about trying to brainwash the public into thinking this is the only choice we have. Man, are you people in for a BIG surprise come the day of Election 2008.

This is such a yawner of a story. Bayh is a DLC'er from long ago, and the ultimate establishment player. It's no great news that he has endorsed Hillary; indeed, one would have expected as such and the only news would have been had he endorsed someone else. The bottom line is still this: for a so called frontrunner, Hillary is the most unpopular, most unliked frontrunner in history. I don't know if Hillary is going to win the nomination or the presidency, but this you can be sure of: if she would win the presidency, she would do to the Democratic party what Bush has done for the Republicans: leave it in the toilet. She would be hugely polarizing, and add to that the ethics of a Nixon, and you have the recipe for disaster. Obama's the slam dunk; Hillary is the dud.

Commenter, It is laughable the way the media goes crazy everytime a DLC tool endorses their queen. but, they always ignore it whenever someone, regardless of their stature, endorses Obama. They have to always shout about Hillary because they want so much to shove her down our throats. They still cannot accept the fact that many of us hate hillary, will not support or vote for her and will vote for who we want. not who they decide is our choice.

Its very evident based on what we have seen and heard the past six years from Democrats that if Hillary Clinton wins the Presidency the Democrats will have us all involved in promoting their ridiculous Global Warming kind agendas while the Terrorists of the world demolish and destroy our Cities and our Citizens not only in this country but around the world. If you think this is outlandish think again. It is all so fricking scary and frightening...just the thought that it may just or can and will become real.

its shocking how so many people are blindly jumping on Hillary hype train. It just reminds me of Bush and Congressional Republicans and how he can whip them into submission. Shameful.

Sure seems to me the Rep's should be minding their own party. The infighting going on in the NRCC, you Rep's need to take your energy and focus on your party instead of hating the Dem's or Clinton's.

I love it. That Hillary Clinton is so far ahead so early in the race. This means that the other candidates Obama and Edwards imparticular will have to take off the gloves and come after her and bring out her negatives in bold letters as this will be the only way to overtake her once she is that far ahead. Of course this won't happen if Obama and or Edwards decide to be the VP mate for her and in this case they will continue to throw soft balls at her. And I suppose it will get interesting to see what the media does when and if they have to report such Clinton negatives. Will the Media trash and burn Obama and Edward in order to crown Hillary? And what will moveon.org do? I can hardly wait.

Allow me to interpret Evan Bayh's motives here.

TeamPolitico: Sep. 23, 2007 - 8:37 PM EST

Think about this. It wouldn't be suspicious at all had it not been for the fact that

and

TeamPolitico: Sep. 23, 2007 - 8:37 PM EST

Now if he were sure about himself and his ability to lead the country, I doubt that he would have given up almost immediately when Obama and Clinton showed up. I tend to trust the longshots more because they stick it through, which means that they believe in themselves...or they're really power-hungry to the point of carelessness. Anyway, his giving up means that he doesn't care whether he can help the country. Now the fact that he waited till he could see whether Hillary would be popular in Indiana also tells me that he's worried about his image among his constituents.

Besides, one of the first things I heard about getting into politics is that if you want to be successful, you join up with a more popular candidate and stick with him. His star-power will propel you to the spotlight. That's politics at it's most basic. If you can completely predict the moves of a politician, you know not to trust him.

Did you know? -Hillary used to say whatever would earn her more votes. Now she takes firm stances on the wrong things, like lobbyist money...

I guess Bayh likes the smell of Hillary's Chinese Bag Money!

Bayh is twice as conservative as Hillary which puts him down close to cellar in terms of conservatism. The current Senate presidential baseball team does not seem to have many center fielders as they coagulate in left field.

Hillary has her spot on the right field line. Suds Kennedy scores put him in the Left field Stands - tough place to be if you want to play the game. His game is pretty far off - although he did succeed in putting windmills off the coast of the Cape, or did he?

Just what hillary needs another worthless Senator -- I cannot understand why moveon.org would nominate and play kissy face with a bunch of Senators and a Congressman - hardly leadership qualifications. A senator knows how to deal in pork, and lobbyists - thats their job or at least the output of their job.

Yet, we have some 8 or 10 Senators with puffed shirts and blouises running around making unfillable promises.

It's still early in the game and most of the candidates are not yet ripe and smelling.

I'd pay money to see Hillary and Anne Coulter go mano al mano. Anne with facts and bookmarks Hillary with her Hillary Stuff.

Feeling sorry for a lib is almost out of character for me but most conservatives share you sentiment regarding the MSM. You think you're getting a bum wrap? Just look at all the GOP articles on Politico with negative implications.

Hillary is the MSM's chosen one. The MSM treats leading DEM candidates, with the exception of Hillary, like a side show and all GOP candidates with contempt.

What a joke!

politico makes him a moderate The authors are smokeing funny weed and/or have been around liberals so long they obviously have no idea what conservative is.

Bayh rates a 16 from the American Conservative Union - you can't go much lower but hillary scored a 8 and Suds Kennedy did a magnificent and wonderful ZERO

Instead BAYH is another liberal loser. in the national journal he rates 28 behind Schumer - a real moderate

Politico needs some lesson in relativity or fact checking

Bayh might be a moderate Democrat if he scored in the 40's instead of 16

from the national journal BAYH shows up being more liberal than "Honest Chuckie Schumer

Politico sounds like a Dan Rather Operation.

While there are moderate Republicans there - you could consider Nelson or Collins as moderale Democrats out of 51 possible choices. I call that a SKUNK race.

Remember this, there are two parties, the one with stupid ideas (GOP) and the pure evil party (Dem). It doesn't matter if the Evil Senators endorse each other they are still evil. I think the Democratics who vote for the Evil candidates are really the stupid ones or else they are smoking too much dope and I hope the those who vote for the Stupid Idea party are too scared to vote for the likes of the Evil Hillary or the Evil Barak. As for me stupid ideas can be changed to smart ideas with a some rigorous analysis, but evil is evil and must be overcome by good.
