 Description

The Great Central Road is the most accessible route linking the Red Centre to Western Australia and is well travelled by tourists throughout most of the year. In fact, the number of vehicles travelling the route each year is around 10,000.

The area however, is remote and the road is actually a sandy dirt track that weaves through extremely remote desert scrub country with very limited facilities and attractions for travellers. This is predominantly land occupied by aboriginal communities. It is advisable to travel in a 4WD vehicle, although a 2WD vehicle will make the trip. The track is frequently graded and it is generally ok for trailers including caravans however conditions vary from sand drifts and corrugations making driving far safer and comfortable in a 4WD vehicle.

2 different views of the Olgas (Kata Tjuta) from the Great Central Road

The route also passes directly into Aboriginal communities in the Central Reserves and it is a legal requirement for travellers to hold a valid Transit Permit at the time of travel.

General

Fuel

OPAL unleaded fuel is now available at Warburton,Warakurna (Giles), and Docker River. This replaces AvGas (which many travellers didn't like to use) as the only fuel available for petrol vehicles to combat petrol sniffing in Aboriginal communities. Opal ULP has similar properties to AvGas to discourage sniffing and is a new product from BP.

Permits

Part III of the AAPA Act, stipulates that transit permits are legally required for any person visiting or passing through an Aboriginal reserve unless they are of Aboriginal descent; a member of either House of Parliament of the State or of the Commonwealth; or is a person lawfully exercising a function under the AAPA Act or otherwise acting in pursuance of a duty imposed by law.

The Great Central Road actually requires 2 sets of Transit Permits because there are Aboriginal Communities on both sides of the border (NT/WA) and each state has its own Aboriginal Lands office and issues its own permits.

Ngaanyatjarra Land Council Aboriginal CorporationPeople travelling through Aboriginal Land in the Central Reserves of Western Australia to, or from the NT border to Laverton.ALT website has an online application form: www.dia.wa.gov.au/Land/Permits
or you can phone the Permit Officer, Estelle Donovan in Perth on (08) 9235 8000
Central Land CouncilPeople travelling through Aboriginal Land in the Northern Territory to, or from the WA border to Yulara. Can be arranged on your behalf by the ALC if requested
or contact the Permit Officer, Central Land Council (CLC) in Alice Springs on (08) 8951 6320.

What is involved in the permit application process?

Permits are free, however you must complete a written application form and wait for it to be stamped and returned to you with an approval stamp. It is a legal requirement that each vehicle carries the permit during travel on Aboriginal Land.

Generally, the ALT can process applications in 24 to 48 hrs and it is the experience of the ExplorOz Team that they can be processed on the same day if travel is on the Great Central Road with no deviations.

The application forms will require the names of all persons entering the land, with a nominated principal applicant who must also give their address and phone contact details. You will also be required to provide vehicle make, model, rego number and state. Note, one permit per vehicle. You will also need to describe the specific route to be taken whilst on Aboriginal land (ie. Great Central Road) and give an estimate of dates (maximum 21 days). Finally you must provide a reason for requesting access to Aboriginal Land, eg. "holiday transit en-route from Alice Springs to Perth".

 Things to See & Do

Tour of the weather station at Giles, Lasseters Cave and the numerous rockholes in the area (if you can find them!).

 History

The Warburton Mission ran from 1933 to 1973, run by William Wade and his wife. In 1961 the Dormitories closed, but the school continued to run. In 1968, due to the large population from the clearing of the Woomera rocket range, Docker River was opened. In 1975, 4 more homeland communities were developed. Tjirrkarli and Tjukurla, although smaller communities opened in the late 1980's.

 Driving Notes

We need new driving notes for this trek note. See our How to Submit a Trek Note page.

For most, the Great Central Road trek starts when you enter the gates of the Uluru (Ayers Rock) National Park.

The first section of the trip from Yulara to Giles is generally an easy and surprisingly scenic drive through the Walter Samuel Ranges, Scherwin Mural Crescent in the Docker River area. Note - contrary to old map notations, camping is no longer permitted at Lasseter's Cave, nor anywhere along the route between Giles and Yulara other than at the one designated aboriginal bush camp.

For more information on the Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park, please read our Uluru Trek Notes. Also note, if you merely bypassing the national park en-route to Docker River your national park fee can be waived on presentation of your valid Aboriginal Lands Transit permit from the Central Lands Council.

This section towards Lasseters Cave is dusty and corrugated but make sure you stop to turn around to view the massive figures of Kata Tjuta and Uluru on the horizon (it's probably a better drive done the other way).

Lasseter's Cave on the Hull River - no camping. Water tank, picnic tables and shade hut. A lovely spot for a short walk and lunch stop.

Lewis Harold Bell Lasseter was a gold prospector in the area who became stranded when his camels bolted in the heat of summer in January 1931 leaving him with no provisions. He actually sheltered in the tiny cave alongside the running waters of the Hull River for 25 days waiting for his relief party to find him but when they didn't come he set out to walk to the Olgas. He only carried 1.7L of water and made just 55 kilometres before dying.

231 39 Kaltukatjara Campground managed by the local Anangu Corporation. This is the only site along the stretch of road between Yulara and Giles where camping is allowed. Fees are: $5 pp/night to honesty box. Good views, excellent campsites. There are 8 main sites designed to take groups of about 8 vehicles. Each designated group site has flushing toilets, water on tap, firewood supplied and fire-rings. A viewing platform at the back of the area gives excellent views of the Petermann Ranges behind. 13663
232 1 Docker River turnoff. The Docker River Store is open for fuel and food supplies (cash and Eftpos) on weekdays 9am-12pm and 2.00pm - 4.30pm, Saturday 9am - 11am and Sunday 11am-12pm (open for fuel only). The WA border is 6.2km from the community.

Petermann Ranges

There are numerous creek crossings, particularly in the section through the Walter James Range, although these should be dry during the winter peak outback travelling season. If there has been recent rain, most crossings should remain passable with little difficulty as they are well prepared with a gravel base and water levels would be little more than puddles. May become closed during wet season (Dec - Feb).

307 75 Big RH sweep where a track from Surveyor General's Corner (Mulga Park - Giles Road/Original Gunbarrel Highway, passable with special permit only) joins the Great Central Road from the left. There is a Len Beadell marker and a large road sign on the corner plus some acacia trees.

Warakurna Roadhouse is open Mon-Fr 8.30am - 6pm, Sat-Sun 9am - 3.30pm. Here you can obtain supplies of food and fuel, mechanical repairs and accommodation includes camping sites, backpacker rooms and motel units. Warakurna operates on NT time, an hour-and-a-half ahead of WA time for tourism convenience.

From here to Warburton there are numerous "rock holes" that you may be interested to visit. These "rock holes" are natural holes in limestone holding ground water. They are obviously of significance to Aboriginal people however the majority of them are marked on maps and can be found (some more easily than others).

796
566 214 Warburton

"Warburton" is just a roadhouse, but it fully caters for travellers. The roadhouse is fully stocked with general hardware and camping supplies plus has long range food for travellers. You may be surprised at the quality and range of meat (frozen) and fresh vegetables and fruit. Warburton also services a continuous stream of aboriginal trade and so there are many frozen pre-prepared meals, lollies, tubs of ice-cream and hot fast food including hot pies and chips.

Out the front the bowsers are locked in cages and there are signs on each cage explaining that photos are not to be taken of bowsers and they have no Eftpos facilities but do take visa, mastercard and bankcard. Outside the roadhouse is a full set of tyre changing tools and air hoses bolted on chains that is free to use.

Besides the roadhouse is a large grassed camping area behind a locked gate. The toilets and showers are in a cubicle adjacent to the roadhouse. Both men's and women's toilets offer soap, hot hand dryers and showers. Laundry facilities are also available.

A new council building adjacent to the roadhouse contains the Tjulyuru Art Gallery, which uses state-of-the-art technology. The gallery use motion-sensors to turn on lighting for each painting and is not manned. The gallery contains paintings done by local artists, many of them dating back to mission times - the theme of this gallery. There is also a preservation room, complete with independent air conditioning. lighting and sealed boxes for each photograph, which holds a visual history of the Warburton Mission period, 1933-1973.

815 249 Tjukayirla Roadhouse
After nearly 250km of driving through remote scrub without much else to see its heartening sight to see signs of civilisation. As you crest a large hill and look beyond, the sight of a bitumen airstrip in the middle of the road is quite a surprise. At the end of the runway, you'll find the turnoff to the Roadhouse. They have fuel, supplies and facilities for minor mechanical repairs plus there are accommodation facilities, a caravan park and camping area. However, take note that if you require emergency fuel there is a call out fee of $10 for after hours service. Hours of operation are listed on Hema's GDT SW map sheet, available from the ExplorOz Adventure Shop.

15km past Tjukayirla Roadhouse the David Carnegie Road leads off to the right. This track leads to Empress Spring at 60km but further north deteriorates with numerous large washouts. It actually leads all the way north to Munkilli Claypan on the Gunbarrel Highway after 234km and at the intersection of the claypan the name of the track also changes to the Eagle Highway, which can be further traversed north to the Warri Site (refer Hema's NW sheet).
