The Pointe Du Hoc is now an official American Memorial Battle Ground Site.

A visit to this memorial site is a must when in Normandy, the whole area is a mass of concrete fortifications set in a landscape of grassed over bomb craters for as far as the eye can see. To see 10ft. thick concrete constructions smashed like matchsticks is quite an unbelievable experience! The destruction of the bombing missions over this area is in evidence virtually everywhere.

The craters which cover all the area can be seen in the picture left. Most of the Bunkers and shelters are open to the public, when the visitor enters it is hard to imagine how anyone actually lived under these harsh conditions, let alone survive!

The entrance to the observation bunker can be seen in the picture to the right. The memorial to the Rangers can be seen on the top of the bunker. Inside it is quite claustrophobic especially in the forward observation room.

On the wall in one of the rooms there is a memorial plaque with the names of all the Rangers who were killed here and at Omaha.
To witness all these names is a very emotional experience.
