The unsung heroes were the submariners in the Midget Submarines, known as the 'X' Boats. Each submarine had a crew of four men, the submarine was only 45ft. long. On the 2nd.June these underwater craft sailed submerged from England to the coast of Normandy, they surfaced, and using the church steeples on the coastline as reference points they positioned themselves, ready to guide the invasion fleet by using flashing coloured lights as navigational beacons. On 5th June they received the message that the invasion had been postponed for 24 hours, so they submerged to the sea-bed and sat it out till the next day. On receiving the Go- ahead they surfaced and successfully completed their mission..
