HAITIAN TEACHERS & HISTORY 101
Calixte Paul

Lamour Josue

Meloche Monique

Paul Calixte

Paul Calixte (Paulo) (born in Cap-Haitian, November 7, 1932) is known as teacher, soccer coach, youth mentor, disciplinarian, politician, Soccer reference, Community builder, father figure, and FICA patriarch. Under Duvalier dictatorship, two of his brothers were killed. This tragic incident did not diminish the family enthusiasm and nationalism to the point that his younger brother Toto Calixte was once our national team coach. Paul completed his primary school at "Les Freres de l'Instruction Chretienne". Then, he attended "College-Notre-Dame High School". In 1952, after his schooling days, he embarked in a teaching career. "College-Notre-Dame High School soccer" coach from antedi luvian time, he always understands that sport and education are one. For him, sport is the best vehicle to build a productive society.

In 1972, he won a championship as the College-Notre 'coach with Jean-Robert Thelusma, Serge Celestin, and Rene Monestime. That same year with Dudre Genard, Real Charlebois, Yvon Joseph, and a multitude of players, he co-founded the foot-ball Inter-Club Association (FICA). A teacher by vocation and a sportsman by passion, he knew how to create the right balance. Unlike the majority of coaches, Paul always encourages academics and has never neglects his teaching obligation. At College Notre-Dame, he is credited for having discovered and coached super stars such as: the Augustes, the Celestins, the Thelusmas, Amos Pierre, James Mesamour, Flambert Audate, Patrick Bel-Homme, John St-Juste,Jimmy Samson, Ernst Calixte,Tito Azemar, Ludovic Cesar, Robillard, Alan Lindor, Masso Moreau, Nathan Prophete, Yvon Marth, Duclos Lucien, Jose Dieudonne and many others.    He always wants his players to be up to par with their schooling responsibilities.

For 52 years, he served as a teacher in many high schools including College-Notre Dame, Mere bleu, Regina, and martin Luther King, A social sciences and languages teacher, he has guided many through the difficult challenges of adolescence.

Pele, Tcho Gervais, Diego Maradona, Joseph Obas, and Guy St-Vil are his non-Fica favorite players.  Under his tireless commitment and vision, FICA has won five Championships in the National leagues and many other titles in various local and regional leagues. From Frandy Mathieu, Abelard, Andre Francois, Bernard Celestin, Achille ,Duclos, and Golman respective    generation, many players have brought him victories, pride, titles, excitement, joy and a sense of accomplishment. However, he has declined to mention anyone in particular as his favorites. Perhaps, he does not want to deflate any ego.

For Paul, every single victory is as equally memorable. But, he admits to have a hard time digesting FICA 2nd division relegation. As a typical patriarch with a futuristic vision, he hopes for the amelioration of education, and a better tomorrow for Haiti.

He is a no- non-sense guy. He does not bite his tongue, but tells you like it is. On November, 17 2006, in Vertieres ceremony, he broke his femur.    Hasenet, Farane, Sepossa,  Le grand Nord, and the soccer world are hoping for his timely recuperation. Paul Calixte is simply a national patriarch and we wish that soon he will grace us with a memoir. Les confessions de Paul!

Monique Meloche

It was a real pleasure talking to you over the phone. Although we never met in person, we have known of each other through your sisters and my fellow nun, Denise Martin. Per your request, these are a few facts of my life; please feel free to choose what fits Hasenet.

I was born on November 17, 1932, in Sainte-Brigide Parish (Canada)where I lived for 18 years until I joined the Holy Cross convent. I completed my primary and secondary education in the parish school. While in convent, I obtained a bachelor in education at Scolasticat St Croix. In 1960, on my own will, l decided to go to Haiti and served at Régina Assumpta for 7 years. In 1967, I was chosen as the principal of Milot School and also taught in Milot School for Teachers. After 5 years of service in Milot, I developed a new interest in Perche de Bonnet, a rural place which is very close to Citadel Fort. With the help of Holy Cross brothers, I co-founded a school, a health center and a Chapel. I lived with the people and for the people for 16 years. Thereafter, this area, named Thibeau became a parish on its own.

Tired and deceived after the 1988 or 87 infamous elections, I left Haiti for Canada. After a year, my calling took me to Rwanda, Africa where I have witnessed the genocide. I came back to Canada in April, 1994 for a little break. Then, for 11 years, I worked in Pilate as the school principal. I left Haiti in June 2006 for another break and to catch my breath which becomes shorter as I'm going downhill. Basically, this is the story of my life, a well lived life. Haiti gave me the best chances to create, to educate the children, to build, to grow, to hone my skills, and to know myself. I have a beautiful life. I was created and put on earth for this mission. With my God-given gifts and with the help of my fellow men/women, I was able to accomplish and succeed in all my endeavors. If I have to start over, I would do it the same way except a few minor adjustments. For 40 years, Haiti was my adopted country.

What am I proud of? My old students who have followed my sacerdotal footsteps such as: Denise Martin, Kesta Occident, Maryse Brisson and many others. What else is needed! Many of my students are successful and are embellishing the earth...

What is my biggest regret? Haiti's chaotic situation! Crimes, Kidnapping and poverty do not reflect the Haitian natural willingness to succeed.

What keep me going? It is the understanding that everything belongs to God and that God is in all. I am from the earth planet which is part of the universe and God is the creator of everything. We all are part of the divine design.

Josue Lamour

"We make a living with what we do and we make a life with what we giveâ€. This quotation reflects the character of Josue Lamour, a prominent Principal of "Lycee National Philippe Guerrier" of Cap-Haitian. Josue Lamour also known as "Direk", was born in Ouanaminthe, Haiti on December 11, 1938.  He began his schooling at "Freres de l'Instruction Chretienne" of his birthplace. After graduating from elementary school, he attended the "LNPG" of Cap-Haitien along with Mr. Roland Prophete (Tet Zo), Jacques Desravines and Francois Felix. Thereafter, he went to Port-au-Prince where completed his secondary and post-secondary education.

The only child in a close-knit family, Direk grew up spoiled by his mother Dadace Olivier and father Jules Lamour. In his formative years, his modest parents taught him Christian values. As a fervent Christian, he always strived to live by Christian values. and aimed at building a society that reflects such values as fairness, equality, and justice.

Direk, a teacher by vocation taught social sciences and languages in several prestigious High Schools in Cap-Haitien while he was an Assistant-Principal at his former High School (LNPG). In 1971 he became the principal of a wonderful institution whose reputation and pedigree were damaged by mismanagement and political turbulence. A young star with a "big afro", he began with the goal to change the course of things by helping young kids. He knew the importance of education and its repercussion on society as a whole.

As a principal he surrounded himself with great personnel including Maitre Monde, Francisco, Lorimer, Wilner and late Claudette Manigat.  Due to Direk's leadership, discipline, philosophy and his hard work the school became a sensation. The new paradigm made many students unhappy, some even felt mistreated. But Direk knew that to make a difference, it required a different approach. His prophetic words were :"Ces petites miseres que vous avez en train d'endurer c'est pour vous preparer a faire face aux grandes miseres de la vie."He was simply preparing them to face the vicissitudes of  life.  Under his leadership, the Lycee was very competitive in all sports.

As a pastor, he has taught us the real way of life. With the support of his loving wife and graceful children, Direk has guided a whole generation to maturity and success and Lyceens all over the world are singing the same credo:" Lyceens travaillons sans treve, les yeux pleins de rayon portant un grand reve."
