Users of open source tools and software looking for a new cache of interesting projects to peruse might find something interesting at swik.net.
The site allows users to view, download and post comments on individual project pages. It uses the wiki approach to gathering, displaying and editing content; anyone can edit content on Swik project pages, making the site very interactive.
Swik is modeled on the wiki concept, associated with the Wikipedia free encyclopedia site, where entries can be edited and readers can post comments and annotations.
Swik features a search engine for finding open source projects. When a user clicks on a topic site, other similar projects are grouped and displayed together. For example, clicking on the entry for the popular BitTorrent open source tool also reveals links to Azureus, an implementation of BitTorrent based on Java, and WombatShare, an open source tool for peer-to-peer file sharing. The site also has an interesting "random project" link on its main page; this takes you to a random entry in the sites database.
Users can subscribe to a particular project and receive updates on that projects' progress, such as bug fixes, new software versions and the availability of new documentation or release notes. Subscribing to a project, users can also receive updates via RSS feeds.
