What is MSM?

MSM is an abbreviation of the term men who have sex with men.

This is a term that respects the fact that not all people who are attracted to others of the same gender are willing to identify as gay, homosexual or even bisexual.

A man who is only attracted to other men may or may not identify himself as "gay".

A man who is attracted to men and women may or may not consider himself "bisexual."

A man who considers himself "straight" (heterosexual), but who engages in sexual relations with other men can be considered a man who has sex with men, or MSM.

Therefore, the term MSM is often used to describe any man who has sex with other men, including gay and bisexual men.

What does the WAAF MSM Club do?

It is important to respect any sexual orientation.

WAAF recognizes that there are men who have sex with men in Ghana, and that MSM account for a significant portion of people living with HIV throughout the world.

Through the WAAF MSM Club, WAAF is reaching out to MSM in Ghana, and providing them with the information and resources needed to reduce their risk of contracting HIV.

In November 2005, through our partnership with the Health Equity Project, WAAF organized a workshop for Ghanaian MSM and sex trade workers. Members of these communities were invited to WAAF to learn more about HIV prevention and discuss some of the issues they face in a safe, supportive environment.

Issues discussed included the HIV-related risks and the constraints and stigma that each group faces. After the workshop free voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) was conducted, and the participants were encouraged to bring their friends back for confidential counseling and testing.

WAAF is very interested in conducting more of these workshops. For more information, see the contact information below.
