New HOV lanes to greet commuters on Loop 101 Monday morning

November 7, 2008

PHOENIX – The Valley’s newest stretch of carpool lanes through Scottsdale will open to traffic in time for the Monday morning commute. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will open the HOV lanes on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Via de Ventura. The addition of these north and southbound lanes to the HOV network will provide carpoolers, bus riders, motorcyclists and qualifying hybrid vehicle owners dedicated lanes to avoid rush hour congestion and cut down on their commute time.

Before drivers can put these lanes to good use, ADOT crews have to put the finishing touches on the lanes this weekend. In order to accomplish this, there will be a single left lane northbound closure so crews can safely finish their work. This weekend’s work is:

Bullet

Northbound Loop 101 left lane closed between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Via de Ventura from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Sunday (November 9).

Carpool lanes are restricted to vehicles carrying two or more people, motorcycles, buses and qualifying hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

ADOT and its contractor worked to open this stretch of HOV lanes several weeks ahead of schedule. There is still plenty of work left before the HOV lanes open to Princess Drive next year. Drivers will still see more work in the median of Loop 101 as this project advances northward and moves toward completion next year.

These projects are part of the Regional Transportation Plan approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. Under the plan, a variety of transportation improvements in the Phoenix area, including new and expanded freeways, transit facilities and local street upgrades, are being constructed between now and 2025. More information on the Regional Transportation Plan is available at www.azdot.gov/ValleyFreeways.
