„Plastik aus dem Meer“ During a recent Seminar the participants discovered large amounts of plastic floating on the surface of the observation area in the Ligurian Sea. Over a distance of 480 NM it was calculated that the average distance between one piece of plastic and the next is only 80m. During examinations with underwater cameras and sonar large quantities of plastic were discovered in a depth of 80-100m in suspense and on the seabed. It was found that the average watercolumn of 1 x 1 m contains 100g of plastic. Converted to the surface size we find that the Mediterranean Sea contains approx. 200 million t of plastic waste. In 2004 a gigantic garbage carpet, weighing around 3 million tons, the size of Western Europe had been discovered floating between Hawaii, Japan and North America in the Pacific, . However, we no longer have to watch powerlessly. Green Ocean has developed a concept, that will clean coastal waters without using particularly complicated measures. The plastic garbage has already once been taken from the sea by fishermen during their activities . Since they have had no incentive to collect and hand in this garbage they threw their annoying "by-catch" over board. Here a chance has been wasted for many years. This we want to change. Green Ocean has worked out a pilot project during which containers are set up by Green-Ocean in two Italian cities (Calambrone and Livorno). In order to compensate the fishermen for the extra labour the garbage is bought from them. Once packed in containers the plastic garbage is recycled properly. To set up this project Green-Ocean cooperates closely with the Italian nature Conservation association Legambiente and the Italian coastal guard. During the entire project data is passed on to the Italian ministry of the environment and the responsible institutions of the EU. We hope that we will accomplish:
"Many are responsible but WE show responsibility!"
