City Historic Districts

Wilmington has sufficient historic resources to have 11 regular City Historic Districts. City Historic District (CHD) status is overlay zoning, and has the power of law in regulating any external work on any building in these 11 districts. ANY exterior work – roofing, masonry, windows, doors, trim, adding or removing rooms or porches or decks, sidewalks or steps – must be reviewed by the Department of Planning and potentially the Wilmington Design Review and Preservation Commission (DRPC) before a building permit can be issued. Download the Wilmington Design Review & Preservation Commission Design Review Proposal (PDF).

Some of the districts have printed guidelines which can be obtained by contacting the Department of Planning at 576-3100. The guidelines for all of the City Historic Districts have their basis in the Federal Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation
www.cr.nps.gov/hps/TPS/tax/rhb/.

Questions? Call Planning's DRPC Coordinator at 576-3113.
