Problem to be Solved:

Which laundry detergent cleans stains out the best?

Hypothesis:

Tide laundry detergent will clean the stains out the best because it is most expensive and it has been on the market for a long time.

Variables:

Four types of stains: ketchup, chocolate syrup, Cran-Grape juice, tea
Three types of detergents: Tide, Gain, Arm and Hammer
Two water temperatures: hot and cold.

Control Group:

The control group is stained cloth washed in each water temperature with no detergent.

Equipment:

Washing machine, cotton T-shirt, stains and detergents.

Procedure:

1. Cut strips from a cotton T-shirt.
2. Stain a strip with one teaspoon each of chocolate syrup, Cran-Grape juice, tea and ketchup. Allow the stains to dry for seven hours.
3. Machine wash each piece of material in the same amount of water and detergent, one strip in hot water and one strip in cold water.
4. Dry each piece of material and rate how well the detergent cleaned each stain. "0" = stain unchanged. "10" = stain completely removed.
5. Repeat steps one through four for each of the detergents and the control group.

Results:

In all cases, including the control group, the stains were removed better in hot water than in cold water. Arm and Hammer detergent removed the stains best. Tide came in a close second place. Gain was third and the control group last.

Conclusion:

My hypothesis was incorrect. I thought that Tide would clean the stains the best, but Arm and Hammer had done the best of cleaning the stains. Tide had come in a very close second though. When I added up the scores for how the detergents cleaned the stains, Arm and Hammer and Tide were very close, followed by Gain and then the control group. I would want to know how Arm and Hammer could clean better than Tide.

Biblical Application:

In this experiment I was testing to see which detergent would clean stains out the best. The detergent that cleaned the best is the same way as Jesus cleaning our hearts from sin. No one else can clean our hearts completely like He does.

"Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin." Psalm 51:2

My experiment related to this verse because we should be washed from our sin as the stains being cleaned. Our lives might be better if we ask forgiveness of our sins and the clothes will look better for being cleaned from their stains.
