What's a SabuCat?

Sabu Cat SabuCat Productions was formed in 1988 by the husband and wife team of Jeff Joseph and Lauren Jones-Joseph. After all these years, the most frequently asked question we get is: "What does SabuCat mean?" Because we are a film related company, the guess we usually hear is that is has something to do with "Sabu", the actor (Thief of Bagdad, Elephant Boy), but no, that's not it.

Back in the early 1970s, we had a pet margay named "Sabu". (All together now: "What's a Margay?" A margay is a jungle cat from Latin America with spots and stripes and teeth and claws, similar to an ocelot, but smaller.) Sabu came to us already named; we did not name her.

Sabu Cat

You know how one hears on animal shows that wild animals make bad pets and that as they become adults they become dangerous? That's frequently true. But it's not always true. And Sabu was the most wonderful cat we'd ever had; she went with us to drive-in movies and once, we took her to Yosemite. She was a terrific, warm, soft, intelligent cat. She died in 1978. When we formed our company, we decided to pay tribute to her by calling the company SabuCat Productions.
