Flags spin gracefully through the cool morning air as agile hands catch and throw them back into the sky. Their movements are complex and ballerina-like, blending dance, extreme flag-catching, and coordination. Any observer would wonder how they manage to keep such poise knowing that if they fail to catch the flag, it could hit them in the head. Being the person who runs away from a baseball if it comes in her direction, I am especially impressed. Colorguard does more than that at seven o’ clock in the morning, when most teenagers are still trying to savor those precious last moments of sleep.

The burning sun causes your shirt to cling onto your moist back as your thighs, legs, knees, and ankles remind you that stopping would be so much easier. But as you contemplate, half a mile has gone by and you realize that the pain is there now. However, success will be remembered forever. This is the life of a Cross Country runner: being mentally and physically strong enough to push himself harder at each race for not only his individual success but that of the team’s as well. As Junior Torie Savage states, “Pain leads to success,” and this tough attitude is what seems to be driving our Cross Country team towards success.

The sun beats down on the vulnerable football squad. The final moments of the game near. Every play counts. The lone wide receiver retreats from the huddle to his assigned position. The command is signaled and the play is live. Players rush all across the field in a chaos of motion. The wide receiver is fatigued, but must continue his run to give his quarterback options. His mouth is dry, his hands swollen, face plastered with sweat, inability to focus, all deteriorating his performance. The necessity of hydration strikes again. The quarterback, under pursuit of a hungry defensive lineman, instinctively guns the ball to the assigned wide receiver. The spiraling ball floats across the field, nearing its destination. His symptoms all come crashing down at once. The wide receiver sprint is slowing to a limp jog. The ball lands into his grip only to glide through his fingertips and hits the unforgiving ground. The play is dead and the game hopelessly lost.

Mountain View High School’s athletics department will be offering Lacrosse for the first time during the spring of the 08-09 school year. Not only our school, but others are
starting up lacrosse this year such as Saratoga and Los Altos. Many students from schools all over the bay are willing to participate in this sport and have been requesting it for some time now, so eventually all of the schools will be offering Lacrosse within the next couple of years. There are schools that don’t have it this year, but will be starting up next year, such as Gunn and Saint Francis. The coach this year for the Lacrosse team will be Joe Juter. Whether or not there will be a girl’s team depends on if there are enough girls are interested.

On the drive to your favorite Sunday spot, it is hard to avoid at least one large field full of kids playing organized soccer. Yet somehow, amidst the myriad AYSO teams that populate the fields, the only pro-soccer reference that the average sports follower understands is “David Beckham.”
In the Mountain View community there is an extremely large number of official youth soccer players, but many of them quit at a young age and move on to another sport.
