~ A COMBINED FUTURE HISTORY~

"But to me the future is still black and blank—is a vast ignorance, lit at a few casual places by the memory of his story."--THE TIME MACHINE, by H.G. Wells.

"Our time-travellers, once they have visited the future, are only permitted (owing to the properties of time itself) at best brief returns to their present..."

"As a consequence, our knowledge of the future is sketchy, to say the least; we have no idea of how cvilizations will grow up or how they will decline; we do not know why the number of planets in the Solar System seems to very drstically between, say, half-a-dozen to almost a hundred..."

"The stories we hear are often partial, hastily reconted, poorly observed, perhaps misunderstood by the traveller..."

"Resultantly, the stories brought us to us of the Earth's future assume the character of legends rather than history..."---LEGENDS FROM THE END OF TIME, by Michael Moorcock.

This has taken a lot of thinking, a lot of research, and a lot of help from all of my fellow Wold Newton scholars. This is only preliminary. I will expect a lot of discussion and a lot of disagreement.

Some thoughts where I have disagreed with some other timelines:

I did not arbitrarily put FOUNDATION at fifty thousand years in the future rather than 20, 000 or 25,000, or to make way for the theory that the DUNE and FOUNDATION empires are on the same timeline. Rather, I am choosing between two possibilities from Asimov's own words. Though Daneel himself asserts he is only twenty thousand years old, Salvor Hardin is of the opinion that atomic power is fifty thousand years old, as a reading of FOUNDATION will tell you. Daneel admits his brain was reaching its limit---and like many of us, perhaps his own judgement on himself, perhaps his own electronic memory was going. Hardin's statement is subject to cold proof, in the form of atomic wastes that can easily be dated by their half-lifes. It is backed by a similar statement about ruins in that age range in PEBBLE IN THE SKY. Thus, the statements by Daneel of being twenty thousand is suspect. And between the two, I choose the fifty thousand year range for FOUNDATION.

As for the DUNE dating, the DUNE Timeline compiled by others than Herbert and published puts atomic power developed some 14000 years before the Butlerian Jihad. Yet in DUNE itself, written by Herbert, it is asserted that space travel has been around for 110 centuries, not 140, before the Jihad. (See the Appendix about Religion.) Since space travel began in the late fifties, a decade after atomic power, at the earliest, that would place the Jihad around 13,000 A.D., not 16,000 A.D. as the Timeline would suggest. (I have followed the Timeline's dating past the Jihad for the most part. We know the Timeline was suspect since it misunderstood and thought all humanity was united in an imperium even in our times, or earlier. This confusion about ancient times soon grew, until the history of Earth was lost by the Foundation's time---with the help of Daneel and his fellow robots.)

The empire of the House of Corrino (later taken over by Paul Atriedes) originally grew in defiance and rivalry with the Instrumentality (centered on Earth) that Cordwainer Smith talked about. Note that the Instrumentality forbade the importation of religion. It must have feared the Orange Catholic Bible and the hordes who followed it, and the Bene Gesserit who used religion to instill power. According to NORSTRILIA, it and the other stories about Lord Jectocost and the Rediscovery of Man happened "fifteen thousand years after the bombs went down on old Earth"---i.e., at the earliest 17,000 A.D. (The other stories of Cordwainer Smith's universe are not dated, for the most part, and although their order can be determined, I will assign no dates to them.)

The Instrumentality, perhaps weakened by the religious movement conveyed by the Underpeople, was someday swallowed by the Corrino empire, its Lords and Ladies being subsumed into the Landstraad of the Dune series. When the stroon of Norstrilia eventually mutated away and became useless, they turned to the melange of Arrakis to extend their lifetimes and discovered other properties that made things like the game of Rat and Dragon superfluous. (One suspects that the Guild grew out of the Scanners.)

Leto II supposedly ended the way of the tyrant and the great empires with his death, the Golden Path. And he did succeed---for over five thousand years, as long as recorded history in our culture. But human nature being what it is, he could not succeed forever and ever. The Trantorian Empire grew, in dim memory of the Corrino and Atreides empire, as the British Empire harked back to the Roman and Egyptian empires....and after eight thousand years, blossomed into a Galactic Empire.

That was helped---after the Instrumentality fell---by the radiation front from the Core Explosion that Larry Niven talked about, which hit around 22,500 A.D. Most alien cultures fled the Milky Way Galaxy then---but humanity, stubbornly, didn't. Either their shielding (and we know that the Dune culture, at least, had advanced force shields, as did the later Trantorian/Galactic Empire) or they figured the simple truth....

That if you can travel faster than light, you needed stand still for such a barrage of radiation. Whole worlds could be abandoned where the wavefront hit, abandoned for a few centuries, and returned to once the wavefront passed. Much of the indigenous life would have died---(the huge sandworms of Arrakis being a notable exception, like the bandersnatchi, too large to be affected---one wonders if they are also a remnent of the slaver-thrint war that Niven talked about?) as the human race lived on worlds where the wavefront had already passed, centuries ago---and moved back once the wavefront passed.

That left a galaxy devoid of aliens, full of worlds for humanity to colonize and to conquer. (Alas, it seems to have killed off the Underpeople also.) The Dune/Corinno/Atriedes empire, despite the implication that it was transgalactic, is shown on closer examination to be composed of stars relatively close to Earth. Many of the worlds mentioned in DUNE circled known stars close to Earth. After Leto II's death, humanity filled much of the Milky Way---and the Trantorian empire united, for the first time, the entire galaxy.

After FOUNDATION AND EARTH, and the later unification of the Foundations/Gaia into the Second Empire, Earth was repopulated, and recognized as the rightful home of mankind. (Indeed, much the solar system was remodeled and made more hospitable, if there is any truth to DC One Million, and Justice Legion A. Headnet is a modified version of the Galaxia that Asimov spoke of.) Later at least one branch of the human race degenerated/specialized into the Eloi and Morlocks.

Closer to our own time, I have decided to include METHUSALEH'S CHILDREN in the timeline, despite the clear indication that it is a seperate timeline in Heinlein's later books. I do that for several reasons---the Diaspora of long-lived Howard Foundation worlds is oddly similar to Asimov's Spacer worlds, similarly long-lived. The place where the timeline of Lazarus Long and Heinlein's "future history" branched off from ours seems to be the sixties, and at that point Lazarus, of course, had already been born and the Howard Foundation was in full swing. Just as there was a Kaiser in both worlds, or a Calvin Coolidge, the likelihood is that there was a Lazarus Long in both worlds, and perhaps the Diaspora in one is the Spacer movement in another. Even if there isn't, THE CAT WHO WALKED THROUGH WALLS showed Lazarus was likely to have children in, and influence, other timelines. Perhaps the Spacer longevity is not just improved medicine and a relatively germ-free environment...?

I have included some of Pournelle's works, because they can easily dated, and because I was interested that they also predicted a Terran Empire ruled by an Emperor (save it was a relatively alien-free Empire of Man, save for the Moties) in the 3000s just as Poul Anderson's Terran Empire did. It's possible they were two seperate political entities, the xenophobic human-only CoDominum run from Sparta, surprised to find the Moties in the "space" it marked as its own, and the Terran Empire run from Earth, (much as the empire from Constantinople and Charlemagne's empire both claimed to be descendents of the Roman Empire, and co-existed but rarely interacted) but more likely they were rumors of the same empire given by time travellers and interpreted in their own ways by Anderson and Pournelle. (Did the militaristic tide of the human worlds grow in response to the "threat" they thought Ringworld posed? Certainly the action of the human ships in RINGWORLD THRONE is more militaristic than the culture Louis Wu remembered.)

And of course, I have included only the barest outlines of the attendent "history" with each. I have contented myself to including some sf works set in the future, and used the tales conveyed by time travellers---so contradictory that they almost take the status of myth, as stated in THE DANCERS AT THE END OF TIME---to light up a few parts of the future that the Time Traveller did not enlighten us on.

I expect this to outrage Asimovian, Heinlein, Niven, Star Trek, etc. scholars...as WNU speculations did some Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan scholars.

This is a starting point for discussion. By no means is it the final word.

And the truth...only the future can tell.

I am listing even contradictory futures. Perhaps a few main timelines, rather than one combined one, will fall out of this.

I'm starting with the 22nd century, because the 21st century timelines are waaay too contradictory.

Professor Parry leads the group, but the real power lies with Erik Klieg and his companion Kaftan, who have an agenda of their own. The Doctor also seems to have his own plans, and while he is apparently trying to convince the group to leave the tomb alone, he's actually helping them get it open. Once they reach the bottom level Klieg begins to defrost the tombs, which he learns are a trap to capture beings with high intelligence so they might be converted into Cybermen. Toberman, Kaftan's servant, is captured, and the Cybermen begin the conversion process on him. They also use Cybermats, a sort of foot-long bionic silverfish, to attack the party. As The Doctor defeats this menace, Klieg and Kaftan appear with one of the Cyber weapons, intending to use it to dictate terms to the Cybermen. The Cyber Controller appears to agree, but after he emerges from the tombs he kills Klieg and Kaftan. The Doctor appeals to Toberman's remaining humanity and the man fights off the Controller long enough for The Doctor to reseal the tombs permanently, or so he hopes.

They arrive on the planet Dido (which The Doctor has visited before). They find a crashed spaceship from Earth with two survivors, an apparently paralyzed man named Bennett, and a orphaned girl named Vicki. They tell the TARDIS crew that a monstrous creature called Koquillion is protecting them from the Didonians, who supposedly killed the other crash survivors. The Doctor, who remembers the planet's natives as peaceful, is suspicious, and discovers that Koquillion is actually a disguised Bennett, who intends to use the girl as an alibi to cover the fact that he committed the murders. Bennett is accidentally killed while fleeing from two Didonians, and The Doctor invites Vicki to join his crew.

5021 A.D.---CAVES OF STEEL by Isaac Asimov.
----Auroran roboticist Han Fastolfe and sociologist-historian Roj Nemennuh Sarton realize the decline of Spacer culture. They want to get Earth to colonize new planets using less robotic service than Spacers. They plan to send humaniform robots to mix among Earth population to understand their way of thinking. The first humaniform robot, Daneel Olivaw, is produced according to Fastolfe's design. Meeting of Daneel and Elijah Baley.

5022 ---THE NAKED SUN by Isaac Asimov.
Elijah Baley and Daneel Olivaw investigate a murder case on Solaria. They discover that the crime was committed by roboticist Jothan Leebig, who planned to build spaceships with positronic brains. A fleet of these ships could protect the pathologically misanthropic society of Solaria from any potential outside threat. Leebig commits suicide. Fastolfe becomes an influential member of the Auroran government and strongly supports new Earth emigration. His Auroran opponents led by Kelden Amadiro want to terraform and populate new planets from Aurora instead of Earth. A group of Earthpeople led by Baley train to live outside the city domes to be able to colonize new planets.

5023 A.D.-- Elijah helps Daneel with solving a dispute between two mathematicians.

5024 A.D.---ROBOTS OF DAWN by Isaac Asimov.
Amy Barone-Stein joins Baley's would-be settlers. Baley investigates a case of roboticide on Aurora accompanied by Daneel and Giskard Reventlov. In the background of the `murder' lies the power struggle between Fastolfe and his opponents over the new colonization. Finally Aurora allows the Earth to terraform new planets and will provide technical support for the task. Giskard thinks Earthpeople must settle on worlds without robots to evade the fate of Spacers. Giskard describes the idea of psychohistory, a science that can foretell events of the future.

5026 A.D.--- The second swarm of humans from Earth begins with Auroran support. They use no robotic service at all. The first colonist group is lead by Ben Baley. The first terraformed (so called Settler) planet will later be called Baleyworld. Earth plans to ban use of robots inside its cities.

5028 A.D.--- There are already twenty-four Settler planets. The relationship between the Settler and Spacer worlds becomes increasingly hostile. 5029 A.D.--- Elijah Baley moves to Baleyworld.

He and Sarah arrive on Zeta Minor, which is being explored by a survey team led by Professor Sorensen. All but Sorensen have been killed, but their signal has been picked up by a Morestran Probe ship commanded by Controller Salamar and first officer Vishinsky. The Doctor learns the team has found a gateway to an anti-matter dimension, and have taken samples. The deaths have been caused by an anti-matter being which is trying to recover the material. Sorensen, who's convinced that he's found a major new energy source for his people, refuses to give up the samples, but the being won't let the ship leave. The Doctor convinces the Morestrans to give the material back, and the ship takes off, but is pulled back because Sorensen has kept a sample. It's infected him, and he mutates into an anti-matter being, which splits into duplicates after Sorensen is shot with a neutron accelerator by Salamar, who's cracked under the strain. With help from Vishinsky and Sarah, The Doctor overcomes Sorensen and takes him back to Zeta Minor in the TARDIS. The anti-matter creature cures Sorensen, and The Doctor suggests he try an alternative energy source, the kinetic motion of planets, to solve the Morestrans' problems.
