Old Processor Electrical Specifications

All of the information contained on this page came directly from the various datasheets provided online. Since not all of the pertinent information is clearly spelled out in the datasheets, some of the numbers were calculated using formulas found in the datasheets. Where these calculations are used is clearly marked and the formulas used are also provided.

Please note that the 'Max. Case Temp.' is the maximum temperature allowable as measured on the exterior of the processor package in the middle directly above the chip die (under the heatsink). It is not the maximum internal ambient temperature of the system enclosure. The term 'case' refers to the processor's package, not the system case. For that, AMD suggests:

"The environmental specifications on most systems guarantee operation for external ambients up to 35°C. Most PC chassis/system boxes result in a 10°C increase in temperature over the external ambient temperature. In general, this means the thermal solution should be designed to allow an internal ambient (TA) of 45°C."
The other chips follow this rule similarly. The Pentium II chip, for example, allows a typical 35°C~40°C ambient temperature and a 45°C upper ambient temperature limit. Although the internal ambient temperature of the system enclosure isn't nearly as important as the temperature of the processor package closest to the CPU die. Intel states:
"An ambient temperature is not specified for the Pentium II processor. The only restriction is that Tcover (cover temperature) and Tplate (thermal plate temperature) be met."

I added the Pentium II temperature Tplate, which is measured under the heatsink directly above the processor core. Tcover, on the other hand, is the measurement on the SEC cartridge on the opposite side from the heatsink.
