CONTACT INFORMATION AND FAQ

If you’d like a response, please read this page before you send an email.

All email goes through the webmaster for rickriordan.com. Please be aware that Rick may not be able to respond personally to every email.

Be sure you read the FAQ below. If you ask a question that is already answered (especially if you ask about the movie) you will not receive a reply.

When you email someone you don’t know, treat the email like a formal letter. Put something in the subject line, start the letter with a greeting like Dear Mr. Riordan, and type your name at the end.

If you’re a minor, never give out your address or phone number in an email without first getting your parents’ permission. There’s really no reason you need to include this information when writing to Rick.

Try to put all comments and questions into your first email. Mr. Riordan can usually respond only once to each fan. If you get a response and write back asking more questions, you probably will not receive additional responses.

Please don’t send file attachments unless you’ve gotten permission from us in advance. Don’t add the website’s email to a group mailing list or your email address will be permanently blocked.

Rick’s Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is there going to be a Percy Jackson movie?

Answer: Yes. You can find out more at several websites like Internet Movie Database though where it says ‘writer,’ understand that I did not write the script. I just write the books. Please don’t ask me further questions about the film version. I can’t comment or provide any additional information.

2. Do you have any control over the movie?

Answer: No. When an author sells the rights to a book, typically full creative control goes to the movie studio and director. The rights to Lightning Thief were sold over five years ago, before the book was even published. This helped the series get noticed and become successful (that’s the good news) but I certainly didn’t have the leverage back then to bargain for more control. I did read the script and got to make some suggestions, but that’s about the extent of my involvement. I can’t tell you anything further about the movie. No hints, no inside info, no previews. Nor can I give you contact information for anyone who is involved in the movie. Sorry!

3. I want to be in the movie. Do you have any information on casting?

Answer: No. As I said, I’m not involved with making the movie, but I do know the casting process is over and all parts have been picked.

4. What about a Percy video game?

Fox owns those rights as part of the movie deal. I have no information on their plans for future video games.

5. How many books will there be in the Percy Jackson series?

Answer: Five. The main story that started in The Lightning Thief is wrapped up in The Last Olympian. I believe it’s important for a series to have a good strong ending, and I always knew that Percy’s story would be five books. If I tried to keep it going longer it just would not be as exciting. However, there will be a second, separate Camp Half-Blood series starting in late 2010 if all goes well. You may see some of your favorite characters from PJO again in those books, but they will not be the main characters. It’s way too early to tell you anything more about the next Camp Half-Blood series. As soon as I’m ready to share more, I’ll post information on the website, but don’t expect any information until late 2009 at the earliest. When you read the ending of Last Olympian, though, you may have some ideas about where the next series is heading.

6. When does the next book come out?

Answer: Book five, THE LAST OLYMPIAN, was published in hardcover on May 5, 2009, in the US, Canada and the UK. The paperback version usually comes out a year after the hardcover. I will have a new fantasy adventure book (not a Percy book) out in the spring of 2010. More info about that will be released soon. The second Camp Half-Blood series should follow in late fall of 2010. Those are the tentative plans. Stay tuned to the website for more!

7. Can you tell me anything about what happens in your future books?

Answer: No, sorry! Anything that isn’t posted on the website, I can’t tell you!

8. Do you have any advice for writers?

Answer: You bet! Check the website here. Please note that I’m not able to read and provide individual comments on people’s stories because I get too many requests like that, but hopefully the advice on the website will help you!

9. I’m a teacher, librarian or bookseller interested in booking an event. How do I do this?

Answer: Unfortunately because of my writing schedule I’m no longer booking events. Check the website here for more information.

10. Where did you get your inspiration for the Percy Jackson series?

Answer: Check the website here.

11. I’m doing a report for school. Can you give me some information?

The website has a ton of information for school reports. Check here for biographical information on me. Read an interview with me here. These are just to get you started. There’s much more. I can’t do individual interviews for school reports, but do some searching around the website and you should find everything you need. Good luck with your project!

12. How can I get a signed book?

I always post my public events on my web calendar. Most of these events happen around the time a new book is released. If you don’t live close to an event, you can contact any store that is hosting me and preorder signed books. The store will get your books signed on the day I do my event. Then they will ship them to you. Almost all bookstores are happy to take orders from out-of-town customers. This applies only to bookstores. Please don’t attempt to mail your books to me for signature. I get too many requests to accommodate shipments of books, and by the time they get to me (if they get to me) they tend to be in pretty bad shape.

13. Why are there different authors for the 39 Clues books?

There will be ten books in the 39 Clues series and each will be written by a different author. I designed the general story arc for the whole series and authored the first book, Maze of Bones, but the other books will be published in such rapid succession — roughly one book every three months — that it would be impossible for me or any other author to write them all. The editorial team works with each author to make sure the story and the characters stay consistent, but they also allow each author to bring their own personal flair to the story.

14. I need something else to read! Can you recommend any books?

You bet! Check the website here.

Contact by Regular Mail:

You can send letters to Rick in care of his publisher:
Rick Riordan
c/o Hyperion Books for Children
114 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10011

This is the only address through which Rick accepts fan mail. Just be aware that it can take several months for mail to be forwarded to Rick in this way. Rick always reads fan letters, but he usually cannot respond via regular mail.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SEND BOOKS THROUGH THE MAIL FOR AUTOGRAPHS. We cannot accommodate such shipments, and will not be responsible for the condition or return of books sent through the mail.

If you write from your school’s address, it’s a good idea to include your teacher’s name with the return address, like: Joe Smith c/o Mrs. Perez’s sixth grade class, Holmes Middle School, etc. If you do get a reply letter, this makes it easier for the school to get it to you. Also be sure to include your own last name. Finally, if you write a letter during the last months of the school year, like April and beyond, it’s very unlikely you’ll get a response before your school goes on summer break, so it’s probably better to write from a home address.
