Polynesian Flag Day Printer Friendly
WHEREAS, Polynesian Flag Day commemorates the first raising of the American flag on Tutuila Island in American Samoa by the United States Navy on April 17, 1900.
WHEREAS, the Polynesian Community will celebrate and share its culture and history with the state of Alaska and its diverse population on June 28, 2008.
WHEREAS, the Polynesian Flag Day Event was established for several reasons: (1) to bring elders, youths, families, friends, communities, and neighbors together to work, to meet, to collaborate, to share ideas, and to respect each other. (2) to celebrate the Polynesian community’s years of nationality and freedom, and honor, he state of Alaska and the United States of America, and for the additional purpose of honoring loved ones of the Polynesian community who fought and are still fighting for American freedoms.
WHEREAS, the Polynesian Association of Alaska will continue working with Alaska communities to build partnerships and collaborate with other non-profit organizations, to develop the skills and leadership abilities to promote different ideas to connect their elders and youths with each other and with all Alaskans.
WHEREAS, the Polynesian Flag Day event is an annual celebration on the last Saturday in June, unless the Board of the Polynesian Association of Alaska sets a different date.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, do hereby proclaim June 28, 2008, as:
Polynesian Flag Day
in Alaska, and encourage all citizens to observe this day.
