I’m back on track this week! Still not feeling in the prime of health, but I am better than I was last week, and Echoes is officially being released on schedule. Now I just hope I don’t have to spend another entire Monday evening in the ER. So far, all indications are that I won’t.
Anyhow, here we are into November already. Feels like 2009 is racing to an end at a breakneck speed. 2010 will be here before we know it, which is crazy and thrilling all at the same time. I should have a couple of client websites launching in the New Year, which is always exciting. There are also a few new opportunities coming up that should kick into high gear starting in January, so I’m stoked about that too!
As for the present, this past week was also exciting since Jon from Spyre Studios officially published Tweevil, the dark twitter bird that I designed as an exclusive freebie for his website. The response has been really great, and I’ve already had the chance to see him used in one blog design! You can see it too over at Spiral Pixel Design. Looks pretty awesome!
But now, let’s get on to this week’s Echoes!
Logo – Mohammad Amiri
This week’s logo comes from fellow designer Mohammad Amiri, based out of Iran. It’s really nothing more than a clever combination of two well recognized symbols from the areas of web design and graphic design.
Mohammad Arimi Logo
As you can clearly see, the logo effectively combines the mouse pointer and the pencil, on the basis of their shared geometry – namely the triangular shape that exists in both of them. From my perspective, this is extremely clever fusion of two very prominent symbols.

If you’ve been following this my posts over the past few months, chances are you’ve heard me mention Jon Phillips, founder of SpyreStudios, at least once. I’ve done some writing for his blog, and just this week Jon released Tweevil – The Dark Twitter Bird, a freebie vector pack that I designed exclusively for SpyreStudios.
I’ve really enjoyed working with Jon, and I definitely hope to collaborate on more projects with him in the future. Jon is also a strong force in the design community, remarkably generous with his time and knowledge, and above all, a very talented designer and developer.
Recently, I had the chance to ask Jon a few questions, which he was kind enough to answer. I think you’ll find that some of his responses are really interesting! Also, I’ve included several works from Jon’s portfolio for you to check out.
Jon Phillips - Founder of Spyre Studios
1. Hi Jon! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview. Why don’t we start with the basics? Tell us a little bit about yourself and SpyreStudios.
It’s my pleasure, thanks for inviting me. My name’s Jon Phillips, I’m a 27 year old web-designer from Montreal, Canada. I’ve been designing for the web for many years now and have launched my design business, SpyreStudios, in 2007. SpyreStudios acts as my portfolio as well as my design blog where I also have regular contributors and guest authors.

This week’s Echoes is a bit late. Sorry about that. I’ve been a little under the weather lately and on Sunday night, between coughing, trying to finish up a design and convincing my daughter that going to sleep was actually a good idea, the evening just sort of evaporated on me… I also seemed to develop a bit of Pink Eye on Sunday, so Monday evening I went to the hospital in hopes of seeing a doctor quickly and getting some antibiotics.
Six hours later, I got home at almost midnight, in no condition to finish this post.
So here it is – Tuesday – and I am finally finishing it off! I really do apologize for the delay. Anyhow, let’s get on to the Echoes before something else goes wrong! (kidding… I think).
Logo – Eighty Three Studios
This week’s logo – for a company called Eighty Three Studios – is a nice and simple play on the configuration of numbers. It’s a really basic design, but it has a lot of impact.
Eighty Three Studios
The playfulness here isn’t too hard to see. Basically, we have the cut off 3, superimposed over the 8, essentially compacting the two digits from 83 into a single mark. This also works very nicely because it gives precedence to the 8, which comes before the 3 in our number. So , in a sense, the mark actually emulates the number 83.

Textures are one element that I really enjoy using in my designs. They can be extraordinarily effective at taking a dull and plain looking design and adding just that extra bit of visual flair that is needed to take the piece to the next level. Just recently, I was working on a design which, though it had a solid general composition, still felt flat and dull. However, by adding just a little bit of texture, I was able to give the design a richer and more luxuriant feel, which was right in line with that I was trying to accomplish.
In today’s post, I’ve collected 21 beautiful poster designs that make use of texture to some degree or other. Some are really strongly textured, while others are a bit more subtle. All of them are extremely cool and inspiring. I hope you enjoy these!
