September 15, 2006: Njongonkulu Ndungane, the Anglican archbishop, says hunger, conflicts and wars should be the focus of the church. The bishop says issues that unite the Anglican Church in southern Africa far out-weight those that divide it.
His statement comes as the Church grapples with the question of whether to accept homosexuals or not. Ndungane says he is optimistic that some consensus will be reached on the issue.
"Let's journey together. There are far more important issues before us. We face gigantic issues such as hunger, poverty, disease, climate change, conflicts and wars, nation-bulding, in particular, on our continent and those are the issues that we should be focusing on. We need to journey together and find mechanisms in which we can live with differences and oneness," he said.
