December 1999: The Lesbian, Gays and Transsexuals of Zambia - Legatra - has been disbanded and its leader Francis Chisambisha has applied for political asylum in South Africa. Chisambisha (26) left Zambia just before Christmas 1999. A few weeks before his departure an obscure organisation called 'The Alliance Against Abnormal Sexual Behavior' had been launched. Chisambisha, who was the first Zambian to come out for his homosexuality, feels threatened by this initiative. According to Behind The Mask's Zambian correspondent the Alliance announced in a radio statement that it intended to 'assist the police' by spotting homosexuals. Chisambisha is the fourth homosexual to seek asylum in South Africa. Two Pakistani gays as well as an Ugandan doctor applied for asylum on the grounds of being gay last year.
