the 2002 Sydney Gay Games winner

Hlengiwe Buthelezi the one and only black gay woman to have participated in the Track & Field at the 2002 Sydney Gay Games. The games started on the 2 - 9 November 2002 and she won with flying colours and brought back home 6 medals. After winning so much it became evident to most South African women that it is possible that we can have lesbian visibility in one way or the other abroad and locally.

She has inspired a lot of people and now we know that we will have a large number of gay people to represent the country in Montreal - Canada in 2006.

These are the following fields she participated in:
Track & Field - Women 5000m ............... Silver
Track & Field - Women 3000m ............... Gold
Track & Field - Women 1500m ............... Silver
Track & Field - Women 800m ................. DQ
Track & Field - Women 400m .................Silver
Track & Field - Women 200m .................Bronze
Track & Field - Women 200m Medley relay .........Bronze

Another group that participated at the games was in soccer:

Women Soccer: Finals Hillbrow Ladies 14

Due to shortage of funds the whole team could not go, only 5 made it and they had to merge with another overseas team and they became Hillbrow Dragons. Through all that they brought home bronze for their participation.
