May 13, 2005: Zanzibar - Police in Tanzania's semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar this week charged four members of an Islamic group for assaulting a man who was allegedly planning to wed his male partner, the group said on Thursday.
"Four members of the association in Pemba island were arrested on Tuesday and charged on Wednesday for abducting and abusing a Zanzibar gay who had arranged to get married to a gay purportedly from Mombasa (in Kenya)," said Salim Juma Haroun, a member of the Zanzibar Imams Propagation Association.
Pemba is Zanzibar's sister island.
The four men were denied bail and remanded in custody until May 23, Haroun said. Pemba police spokesperson Ameir Juma Ameir confirmed the men were charged for assault.
Ameir added that police were working with Muslim leaders to prevent the gay marriage from taking place on Zanzibar, which is home to about a million mostly Muslim people.
"According to the law, this (gay marriage) is illegal marriage," Ameir said, but said police would not arrest the man alleged to be arranging the wedding because there was insufficient evidence to charge him in court. - Sapa-AFP
