November 3, 1997: An old Tanzanian tradition in which women may marry women, alarm Aids workers - but not because the 'married' women have sex. Rayner Ngonji reported in the Johannesburg-based Mail and Guardian.

According to Ngonji this tradition practised in Mara in the northeastern part of Tanzania is known as 'Nyumba Ntobu' or 'a house manned by a woman.' The custom of the Kurya community is not regarded as homosexuality as the 'woman husband' does not have a sexual relationship with the other woman. It is a form of marriage aimed at carrying forward the lineage of wealthy families where there are no males.
